On The Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Even though the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of the most famous day hikes in the world, many hikers underestimate it. The terrain, weather, and logistics all add up — and small mistakes can quickly turn the day from amazing to exhausting. I wrote full blogposts about Tongariro Alpine Crossing and What to Pack for this 19.4-kilometre hike so you don’t make the same mistakes I did.

Starting Too Late in the Day

One of the biggest mistakes is starting late. When you begin the hike after mid-morning you (might) face larger crowds on narrow sections. Weather usually tends to worsen in the afternoon. The shuttle schedules become tighter and more full in later hours, so small traffic jams may occur. You might not even get a parking space if you’re exploring New Zealand with rental vehicle. (NZ with car or campervan). You also risk finishing in low light, depending on season you’re hiking, or fatigued.

Tip: Aim for the earliest shuttle possible — ideally arriving at Mangatepopo around sunrise. Shuttles usually start driving around 6am. I wrote more about shuttles in the full Tongariro blogpost.

Underestimating the Weather

The alpine environment changes fast. A calm morning can turn into freezing wind or heavy rain within hours, or even scorching heat as you’re walking dark volcanic surfaces. Many hikers start in light clothing, that turns out to be too light when conditions change. People also don’t bring waterproof layers or don’t prepare for wind chill at Red Crater. Better safe than sorry, right?

Tip: Always pack for four seasons in one day — even if the forecast looks perfect.

Not Bringing Enough Water

There are no reliable water refill points along the 19.4-kilometre track. There is no shop or stall to buy it, streams are very limited and not treated. A good option is to have a bottle with integrated self-filtration system (shop Lifestraw) to filter out possible bacteria & parasites from the streams along the way. A common mistake is bringing too little water (especially on hot days) and no electrolytes for long exertion.

Tip: Carry at least 2–3 litres per person.

Wearing the Wrong Footwear

The descent from Red Crater is steep and covered in loose volcanic scree. The descent after the last basin continues downhill for several hours. Many hikers struggle because they wear running shoes with poor grip or brand-new boots (not broken in) and other unsupportive footwear.

Tip: Good grip and comfort matter more than style — this terrain is unforgiving.

Underestimating the Descent

Most people prepare for the climb — but forget about the long downhill section. When you reach the Emerald Lakes, you’re literally only half way through the hike. Like mentioned above, after the Emerald Lakes the trail continues for hours. Your legs might become fatigued and sore. Overall, the final section feels longer than expected.

Tip: Save energy for the descent — it’s mentally and physically draining.

Not Booking Shuttles in Advance

During peak season, shuttle services fill quickly, especially on clear weather days. I’d suggest you book your shuttle as soon as you make the plan for Crossing. Common issues I’ve heard people face were missing preferred departure times and having to wait hours for return pickups. There’s also limited flexibility if weather changes, because people cancel in poor weather and rebook for the first possible option.

Tip: Book your shuttle at least a few days ahead in summer.

Ignoring Track Closures

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing passes through active volcanic terrain and exposed alpine ridges. Occasionally it happens that high winds close the crossing. Sometimes snow or ice makes sections unsafe. In any case – DOC issues warnings or restrictions. Always check their website a day before your planned hike.

Tip: Always check official conditions before you go — and be prepared to change plans.

Is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing worth it?

Yes — but not in the casual “that was a nice hike” way.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is the kind of experience that stays with you long after your legs have recovered. It’s not comfortable, and it’s not always easy — but that’s exactly what makes it unforgettable.

When you’re climbing the Devil’s Staircase with wind pushing against you, or standing at Red Crater surrounded by raw volcanic silence, or watching the Emerald Lakes appear like something painted into the landscape, you realise this isn’t just a hike. It’s a journey through a living, shifting earth. The steam vents are thundering in the distance and if the wind blows in your direction, you will smell the breath of Earth.

You don’t come here for relaxation. You come here to feel small in the best possible way — to move through a landscape that feels ancient, powerful, and completely indifferent to whether you make it or not.

And then, hours later, when you finally reach the end at Ketetahi, exhausted and sun-worn and slightly overwhelmed, you understand why this trail is spoken about with so much reverence.

It’s not just one of the best day hikes in New Zealand.

It’s one of those rare experiences that quietly resets your definition of what a hike can be.

The islands lay between larger brothers Bali and Lombok in Indonesia. The Nusa Trio lays just off the southeast coast of Bali.

Nusa Ceningan is the smallest of the three, Nusa Lembongan is the middle-sized and the most developed one, while Nusa Penida is the largest, but also the most underdeveloped and wild.

Nusa Penida

The largest and most rugged of the three islands. It is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, and iconic landmarks such as Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Saren Cliff VIewpoint and Broken Beach. Nusa Penida offers a more adventurous and off-the-beaten-path experience, with challenging terrain and fewer tourist amenities compared to the other two islands.

Getting to Nusa Islands

Accessibility to Nusa Penida has improved in recent years, with multiple daily speedboats departing from Sanur, a popular port in Bali. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes. Once on the island, travelers can rent scooters or hire a driver, as public transportation is virtually non-existent. The island’s roads are improving but still can be challenging, especially for inexperienced scooter riders. Despite these challenges, the breathtaking sites like Kelingking Beach, Diamond Beach and Angel’s Billabong make the effort worthwhile.

The easiest and most common (therefore less room for error) way to get to Nusa islands is taking a speedboat from Bali to one of the islands.

It’s best to reserve your boat/ferry ticket ahead of time, reasons being:
1) chaos in Sanur Harbor,
2) multiple vendors selling different options for various prices, and
3) availability during peak season.

Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is the most developed and tourist-friendly of the Nusa Islands. Regular speedboat services from Sanur connect Bali to Nusa Lembongan in about 30 minutes. The island’s infrastructure is more advanced compared to Nusa Penida, with well-maintained roads and a variety of accommodation and dining options. Visitors can easily explore the island by renting scooters, bicycles, or using local taxi services. Nusa Lembongan’s accessibility and amenities make it an ideal destination for families and travelers seeking a mix of adventure and comfort.

Nusa Ceningan

Nusa Ceningan, the smallest of the three islands, is connected to Nusa Lembongan by the iconic Yellow Bridge. Accessibility to Nusa Ceningan is typically via Nusa Lembongan, as there are no direct boats from Bali. After reaching Nusa Lembongan, visitors can cross the Yellow Bridge on foot, by scooter, or by bicycle (the bridge cannot be crossed by car or van due to its size). The island is compact and easy to navigate, with a quieter and more laid-back atmosphere. Its small size and close proximity to Nusa Lembongan make it a perfect day trip destination or a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape the busier tourist areas.

How Many Days Should I Spend on Nusa Lembongan?

Depending on what you want to see or do in Nusa Lembongan, how you want to see it and how fast you’ll be exploring it, you would need 1–2 days on the island.

But if you only have one day to spare, a day trip around Nusa Lembongan is still doable. You could organise yourself a speedboat transfer in the morning, rent a scooter on the island and return in the afternoon. We’ve done this on our first trip to Nusa Lembongan and we found the island so cool we decided to come back for a week-long stay a few months later.

You wish to visit Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, but you only have one day to spare and it’s way too much organisation by yourself.

How To Get To Nusa Lembongan?

Morning is the best time to take the fast boat because the ocean is calmer. Nusa Lembongan is approximately 30 minutes by fast boat from Sanur. Arrival is to Mushroom Bay, which is actually a beach and doesn’t have any dock. That means you descend from the speedboat by small stairs into the water. Depth is usually between your knees and waist, so a friendly advice – wear shorts and flipflops.

To get to your accommodation you could rent a scooter on site (popular option). Most accommodations offer a transfer for a reasonable price, but you can also find locals on site who will offer you transfer. For the local transfer expect to pay Rp 50,000 – Rp 100,000, depending on where you’re staying. Negotiable!

Where To Stay on Nusa Lembongan?

If you have a few days to spare, we recommend staying a night or two. Here are some accommodations you can consider:

5 Ways to Get Around Nusa Lembongan

There aren’t a lot of standard car-vehicles on the island. Most people get around with a scooter – no need to book that one in advance, because you’ll easily rent it on spot. If you still wish to have at least a contact for scooter rental keep reading. But let’s see all the options you have to get around this white-sand-pristine-sea-island.

And unlike Bali, Nusa Lembongan (or Ceningan or Penida) do not have Gojek or Grab service.

1) Tours: the best way to visit Nusa Lembongan, especially if you’re limited on time, is as part of a guided tour. You can find many different tours here and choose to your own liking.

Our recommendation: This 8-hour tour, departing from Bali, which covers all the highlights – the Devil’s Tears, Yellow Bridge and Dream Beach – and even has lunch included. Nusa Lembongan also has magnificent underwater world, so you might consider a snorkeling trip with Manta Rays, turtles and more.

2) Rent a scooter: scooters are the most common mean of transportation on Nusa Lembongan. You can rent them pretty much anywhere since everybody knows at least somebody that rents scooters. Price is anywhere between Rp 75,000 to Rp 100,000 per day.
But for a reliable and affordable scooter rental you can contact Agus, owner of Kelle Transport. We booked our scooter with him for Rp 80,000/day. He would deliver the scooter to Mushroom Bay too. Agus WhatsApp: +62 81238 627 206. (He even helped us tremendously when our scooter was mistakenly stolen!)
Note: in Nusa Lembongan, it’s common for scooter riders not to wear helmets (as opposed to Bali), and consequently, they’re often not provided by rental services. Don’t worry, the roads are relatively quiet, and you won’t be going very fast. 

3) Rent a Bicycle: locals call them “pushbikes”. Most places rent them (ask in your accommodation) for around Rp 30,000 to Rp 50,000 per day. We have only used this option when staying in the areas around Mushroom Bay and Jungut Batu – after all, Nusa Lembongan has quite some hills. This is the most budget-friendly option, plus you’ll stay active.

4) Rent a buggy: or a golf cart. It’s pretty expensive option but a fantastic solution if you’re in a group of 4 to 6 people. Expect to pay around Rp 700k for a few hours rent (5h or 6h). Most better accommodations have them, so ask around.

5) Rent a boat with local driver: you will notice these traditional boats along all coast of Nusa Lembongan. Catch a local or ask around, prices are of course negotiable since this is a non-standard way, but they will gladly tour you around a bit when you agree on rate.
When visiting Mangrove Forest the locals with boats will already be waiting for potential customers to show and explain about local flora and fauna. More about this in the “What to do” section below.

What Apps Will Be Useful On Nusa Lembongan?

  • WhatsApp: most locals use WhatsApp either for calling or making appointments and bookings with tourists. WhatsApp is a free app.
  • Maps.me: if you aren’t planning on using local SIM card and data, we’d recommend you download Maps.me. It’s a pretty detailed app in Indonesia and we occasionally found it to have even better mapping of Nusa Lembongan than Google Maps. Maps.me is free up for up to 10 downloaded maps.

What to bring to Nusa Lembongan?

Now that we know your options for getting to and around the island, here are things you should prepare for your trip there:

  • Local SIM Card – Having a local SIM card is always a good idea. We have tested BNESIM electronic SIMs many times so far and it works fantastic in Indonesia, so we are definitely recommending it. You literally have data transfer as soon as your flight lands in Indonesia. Comes handy with all the transfers too (for example, you can order yourself a Grab straight away and probably save on a taxi rip-off). Note! Your mobile phone has to be eSIM compatible to use this option. Get your eSIM here before-hand!
  • Cash (in Rupiah) – there are some ATMs Nusa Lembongan and many places accept credit cards, but it’s always good to have some cash with you.
  • Sun coverage – All the things you need to combat that strong sun in Bali – a hat, sunscreen (at least SPF50!), and sunglasses. If you are on a scooter, wear a thin layer with sleeves that can be removed.
  • A thin cotton scarf/sarong wrap – I love this because they are versatile! you can wear it around your neck and shoulder to protect yourself from the sun, but can also double up as something to sit on while you are at the beach.
  • Swimwear – once you see how clear the water is in this part of the world, you’d want to jump in. A travel towel comes handy, too!

The gorgeous Nusa Lembongan, a pristine island nestled in Indonesia’s Bali Sea, beckons travelers with its beautiful landscapes and vibrant street life. How To Get To Nusa Lembongan

The easiest and most common (therefore less room for error) way to get to Nusa Ceningan is taking a speedboat from Sanur Harbour (Bali) to Mushroom Bay on Nusa Lembongan.

It’s best to reserve your boat/ferry ticket ahead of time, reasons being:
1) chaos in Sanur Harbor,
2) multiple vendors selling different options for various prices, and
3) availability during peak season. You can book your speedboat tickets on 12Go for the best price. 

Cool thing about 12Go is you can book multi-island tickets (for example we went Sanur – Lombok – Nusa Penida – Nusa Lembongan – Sanur).

1) Visit Devil's Tears

Devil’s Tears on Nusa Lembongan is a breathtaking natural attraction where powerful waves crash into the rugged cliffs, creating explosive water sprays and mesmerizing blowholes. This dramatic spectacle, combined with stunning sunset views, makes it a must-visit spot on the island. 2) Relax at Dream Beach

Dream Beach on Nusa Lembongan is a picturesque, serene spot known for its powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. It’s an ideal location for sunbathing, swimming, and relaxing in a tranquil environment. The beach features several amenities, including beachfront resorts, cozy cafes, and a well-maintained swimming pool with stunning ocean views. Visitors can also enjoy delicious local and international cuisine at the nearby restaurants, making Dream Beach a perfect destination for a day of leisure and comfort.

Some days the sea will be rough and during high tide the whole beach gets splashed with giant waves.

3) Explore the Mangrove Forest on a boat tour

The Mangrove Forest on Nusa Lembongan is a lush and tranquil area located on the northern side of the island. Here, you will rarely hear anything else beside the nature’s sounds. Visitors can explore the dense mangroves with a guided boat tour. On-site amenities include small cafes and local warungs where visitors can enjoy refreshments and traditional snacks, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful escape.

4) Kayak or Paddleboard in the Mangrove Forest

Another way to enjoy  the tranquility of the mangrove forest is by paddling through, either with a double kayak or on a stand-up paddleboard. Both can be rented on-site. Enjoying the solitude, peaceful environment and spotting wildlife!

5) Surf or Enjoy Jungut Batu Beach

Jungut Batu is a bustling hub known for its beautiful beach, vibrant atmosphere, and range of activities. The area offers a lot of beachfront accommodations, diverse restaurants, lively bars, and surf shops. Visitors can enjoy surfing the consistent waves, snorkeling in the clear waters, and exploring the colorful coral reefs. The beach is also a great spot for relaxing and watching the sunset. Additionally, Jungut Batu serves as a convenient base for boat trips to nearby attractions, making it a popular choice for both relaxation and adventure.

6) Take A Stroll Over The Jungut Batu Boardwalk

Nice views, beautiful boardwalk, greatly maintained! At the very southern end of Jungut Batu area there is a nice wooden coastal boardwalk. You will find the location on Google Maps if you search for “Thai Pantry”. The boardwalk hugs the edge of the cliffs and offers gorgeous views across the ocean.

Tip: arriving in the morning hours you will most likely be alone. In the afternoon it’s popular to grab a cocktail at one of the cliffside bars.

7) Visit (and Cross) the Yellow Bridge

The iconic Yellow Bridge is a landmark connecting the neighbouring islands Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. This vibrant yellow suspension bridge is a vital transportation link for locals and tourists. It is also a picturesque spot, offering stunning views of the turquoise waters below (at least during high tide). Accessible by foot, bicycle, or motorbike, the bridge provides an easy and scenic way to explore both islands. The Yellow Bridge has become a popular spot for photos, making it a must-visit attraction for travelers seeking to capture the beauty and charm of the Nusa Islands.

8) Relax at Mushroom Bay

Mushroom Bay is a charming and serene cove known for its calm, clear waters and relaxed atmosphere. The bay is dotted with beachfront resorts, cozy bungalows, and inviting cafes and restaurants, providing ample amenities for a comfortable stay. You won’t see a sunset here, though. You can swim, snorkel, or paddleboard in the tranquil waters.

The Mushroom Bay is also the main harbor on Nusa Lembongan, with several speedboats/ferries leaving daily.

No entrance fee and plenty of parking space on the street leading to it.

9) Grab a delicious coffee, breakfast or matcha at Mushroom Espresso

We could easily mark the Mushroom Espresso as the best coffee makers on the island. Stop by for a drink and a freshly baked croissant (mind, they usually run out of them by 10.30am!) and then continue your exploration of the island. There is a large free parking place on spot. You could use this parking lot when visiting Mushroom Bay as well, it’s just a walking distance further.

10) Explore Gala-Gala Underground House

A local resident has been slowly scraping an underground house for over 15 years. You could come and explore the area if you’ve seen most of the other things on the island. The house/cave is definitely unique, a literal underground labyrinth. It showcases traditional Balinese architecture and culture.

Entrance fee is Rp 10,000 per person, parking is free on site.

11) Enjoy the View from Panorama Point

Take in the breathtaking panoramic views of Jungut Batu Beach and the surrounding areas, perfect for photography. You can stop at the Horizon bar as well for either lunch or a drink. On a nice day Mount Agung on Bali is seen in all its magnificence.

12) Attend a Yoga Session at a beachfront studio

You can find many good yoga studios on Nusa Lembongan, a lot of them at the beachfront. Imagine taking in a deep breath of fresh ocean breeze, diving into each asana in a tranquil environment, with sea waves filling your ears…

Feels relaxing just typing this. I have personally attended yoga classes in 3 different yoga studios on Lembongan – Island Yoga Lembongan, All Yoga Training Bali, and Yoga Bliss Lembongan (not entirely beachfront). Very satisfied with the sessions and I’m a 14-years yoga teacher myself

13) Visit the Seaweed Farms

Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan are literally famous for their seaweed farms. While exploring either of the islands you will highly likely see large sheets of seaweed displayed by the side of the road, drying on the hot sun. Many local families rely on seaweed farming as their main source of income. Their farms are found along the island’s coast, where you can see the farmers at work during low tide. They plant, grow, harvest, and dry the seaweed, which is then sold for various uses, including the production of cosmetics, food, or biofuels. You will smell the seaweed drying, too. 🙂

Visiting such farm is an interesting experience, especially if you hire yourself a local guide who can translate details and give you an even better insight into this specialized work.

14) Marvel at the Sunset at Sandy Bay Beach

End your day with a beautiful sunset view at Sandy Bay Beach. The beach is gorgeous, not too crowded, and if you fancy some delicious food and refreshing drinks you can park yourself at the Sandy Bay Beach Club, which is located just above the beach.

15) Snorkeling with Manta Rays

Snorkeling with Manta Rays is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of the best wildlife encounters we’ve had in our lives. The Manta Rays are majestic and friendly animals with a wingspan of up to 6m. The gentle giants cruise around you while you snorkel amongst them.

It’s easy to join one of the tours when already on Nusa Ceningan, but if you prefer to have the best possible service, we’d recommend booking in advance.

Nusa Ceningan is a small island located between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida, just off the southeast coast of Bali, Indonesia. Part of the Nusa Islands trio, Nusa Ceningan is the smallest of the three but offers its own unique charm and attractions.

Nusa Ceningan is known for its laid-back atmosphere, pristine beaches, and stunning natural landscapes. The island is accessible via a short bridge from Nusa Lembongan, making it a popular day trip destination for those staying on its larger neighbor. You can enjoy activities such as snorkeling, cliff jumping, zip-lining, exploring mangrove forests, visiting seaweed farms and relaxing on its beautiful beaches. Its Blue Lagoon, a famous cliff-jumping spot, is a highlight for adventure seekers, the Secret Beach is a gorgeous gem, never crowded, and the Yellow Bridge are the main highlights on this small island.

The whole area of Nusa Ceningan is only about 3 square kilometres, so it would only take you a few hours to walk around and explore several natural attractions here. Many things have changed in Nusa Ceningan within the last few years to cater to the needs of tourists. Several restaurants, villas, hotels and places to hang out have since been built rapidly throughout many prime locations on the island.

How Many Days Should I Spend on Nusa Ceningan?

Depending on what you want to see or do in Nusa Ceningan, how you want to see it and how fast you’ll be exploring it, you would need 1–2 days on the island.

But if you only have one day to spare, a day trip to Nusa Ceningan from Nusa Lembongan is very doable and common to do. You can get to Ceningan via the famous and picturesque Yellow Bridge in the morning and come back to Lembongan in the afternoon after practically seeing everything. We’ve done this on our first trip to Nusa Ceningan and we found the island so cute we decided to come back for a 4-day stay a few months later.

You wish to visit Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan, but you only have one day to spare and it’s way too much organisation by yourself.

HOW DOES 12GO WORK?
You find the desired transfers, all prices visible, and put them in the basket. Upon payout you pay one receipt only. You receive the final receipt on your email. You receive separate tickets on your email for each transfer, with all instructions and separate prices. Super easy to understand and their website is easy to navigate.

Morning is the best time to take the fast boat because the ocean is calmer. Nusa Lembongan is approximately 30 minutes by fast boat from Sanur. Arrival is to Mushroom Bay, which is actually a beach and doesn’t have any dock. That means you descend from the speedboat by small stairs into the water. Depth is usually between your knees and waist, so a friendly advice – wear shorts and flipflops.

Then, you’d arrange yourself a ride to Nusa Ceningan. You could rent a scooter on site (popular option). Most accommodations offer a transfer for a reasonable price, but you can also find locals on site who will offer you transfer either to the Yellow Bridge or to your accommodation. Read along as to why this either/or 🙂

Nusa Ceningan is connected to Nusa Lembongan by a famous Yellow Bridge. This yellow bridge is very narrow, appropriate for walking, cycling or scooters ONLY. It’s too narrow for cars, so cars or vans can not cross the only connection between Ceningan and Lembongan.

Where To Stay on Nusa Ceningan?

If you have a few days to spare, we recommend staying a night or two. Here are some accommodations you can consider:

Getting Around Nusa Ceningan

With Nusa Ceningan being so small your best option to seeing the most epic sites is either walking around the island or driving around with a rented scooter. Careful though, the main road on the Eastern part of Nusa Ceningan is… a wild combination of gravel, dirt, rocks and old concrete. But the island is so small you need only 14 minutes to drive from far end to the other side.

For a reliable and affordable scooter rental you can contact Agus, owner of Kelle Transport. We booked our scooter with him for Rp 80,000/day. He would deliver the scooter to Mushroom Bay too. Agus WhatsApp: +62 81238 627 206.

In Nusa Ceningan, it’s common for scooter riders not to wear helmets (as opposed to Bali), and consequently, they’re often not provided by rental services. Don’t worry, the roads are relatively quiet, and you won’t be going very fast. 

What Apps Will Be Useful On Nusa Ceningan?

  • WhatsApp: most locals use WhatsApp either for calling or making appointments and bookings with tourists. WhatsApp is a free app.
  • Maps.me: if you aren’t planning on using local SIM card and data, we’d recommend you download Maps.me. It’s a pretty detailed app in Indonesia and we occasionally found it to have even better mapping of Nusa Ceningan than Google Maps. Maps.me is a free up for up to 10 downloaded maps.

What to bring to Nusa Ceningan?

Now that we know your options for getting to and around the island, here are things you should prepare for your trip there:

  • Local SIM Card – Having a local SIM card is always a good idea. We have tested BNESIM electronic SIMs many times so far and it works fantastic in Indonesia, so we are definitely recommending it. You literally have data transfer as soon as your flight lands in Indonesia. Comes handy with all the transfers too (for example, you can order yourself a Grab straight away and probably save on a taxi rip-off). Note! Your mobile phone has to be eSIM compatible to use this option. Get your eSIM here before-hand!
  • Cash (in Rupiah) – there are hardly any ATMs or places that take credit cards in Nusa Penida, so you need enough to last the entire time you’re on the island. I would set aside about Rp 100k – 150k per person per day.
  • Sun coverage – All the things you need to combat that strong sun in Bali – a hat, sunscreen (at least SPF50!), and sunglasses. If you are on a scooter, wear a thin layer with sleeves that can be removed.
  • A thin cotton scarf/sarong wrap – I love this because they are versatile! you can wear it around your neck and shoulder to protect yourself from the sun, but can also double up as something to sit on while you are at the beach.
  • Swimwear – once you see how clear the water is in this part of the world, you’d want to jump in. Trust me.

1) Experience the Yellow Bridge

Before reaching Nusa Ceningan, the iconic yellow bridge will catch your eye. Serving as the only land-link between Ceningan and Lembongan islands, this bridge offers an opportunity for a leisurely stroll and some great photo opportunities. Just be cautious of passing scooters while you’re on it.

2) Cliff Jump at Mahana Point

Mahana Point is a restaurant/bar that offers cliff jumping. This rocky outcrop hangs over the ocean, making it a picturesque spot for a drink. For those who prefer to stay grounded, it’s also a fantastic vantage point for observing others take the plunge.

The crystal-clear waters below present a captivating view of the coral and ocean floor, making it an ideal setting for both cooling off and soaking in the natural beauty. Mahana Point is also a fantastic spot to enjoy a sunset from.

3) The Marvelous Blue Lagoon

Park your scooter in shade at Mahana Point (free of charge). The parking lot is just next to the trailhead. The trail is nicely seen on Maps.me, but if you just look around you, you’ll notice a group of bushes – that is where the trail starts, through the field.

Stick to the left trail, and in about 5–10 minutes, you’ll arrive at the Blue Lagoon Viewpoint. Here, you’ll be treated to the sight of the bluest, milkiest water imaginable. Remember to bring plenty of water as there’s no shade at the viewpoint. Also, the Blue Lagoon is the most astonishing at high tide – perhaps check the tide times.

4) Stop at the Seaweed Farms

Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan are literally famous for their seaweed farms. Those are an integral part of the island’s local economy and culture. While exploring either of the islands you will highly likely see large sheets of seaweed displayed by the side of the road, drying on the hot sun. Many local families rely on seaweed farming as their main source of income. Their farms are found along the island’s coast, where you can see the farmers at work during low tide. They plant, grow, harvest, and dry the seaweed, which is then sold for various uses, including the production of cosmetics, food, or biofuels. You will smell the seaweed drying, too. 🙂

Visiting such farm is an interesting experience, especially if you hire yourself a local guide who can translate details and give you an even better insight into this specialized work.

5) Have lunch at Sea Breeze Cafe

Sea Breeze Cafe is a popular spot for lunch and drinks while enjoying views of the ocean. With its pool, hammocks, swings, beach and music, this place creates beach club vibes. The best time to visit is during high tide. In low tide the water disappears.

6) Marvel at the Views At Shiroi Lookout and Kevisato Viewpoint

Shiroi Lookout and Kevisato Viewpoint are located right next to each other and close to the Blue Lagoon Viewpoint. When returning from the Blue Lagoon, you’ll find these viewpoints on the left along the ocean. Take the turn just before reaching the concrete lot. You can explore more of the cliff edges, but be cautious – some areas can be slippery and rocky.  This spot offers an excellent vantage point to observe the waves crashing against the cliffs.

7) Enjoy one of the infinity pools during low tide

Relax and dip into the tidal infinity pools at one of the three following places: Ceningan Cliffs, Klyf Club or Three Island Bar.

All three suggestions are easily found on Google Maps. All three have fantastic views, either over neighbouring Nusa Penida’s Crystal Bay and Toya Pakeh or Nusa Ceningan’s incredible Blue Lagoon. No minimum spending, but you’re required to purchase at least a drink to enjoy their infinity pools complimentary. 

8) Zip-line at Driftwood Bar

Driftwood Bar is a popular tourist destination on Nusa Ceningan because of the zip lining you can do here. The epic zip-line ride over the ocean is Rp 150,000 per person. Even if you don’t want to do zip-lining it’s still worth visiting just to see the unreal views! Driftwood Bar also has an infinity pool with a view of the ocean, where you can swim for free if you buy a drink from the bar. 

9) Snorkel, Swim or Just Enjoy The Secret Point Beach

Secret Point Beach is a beautiful beach, small and intimate, with great waves in the distance and stunning views. It can only be accessed through the restaurants above. Walk past them and at the end there are stairs down to the beach. Secret Point Beach is great for surfing, paddle boarding and snorkelling. Stay mindful – waves occasionally get totally wild (especially during high tide). If that is the case, avoid swimming, as the currents are crazy strong.

10) Find Secret Beach

Secret Beach on Nusa Ceningan is a secluded gem known for its serene and untouched beauty. The beach is accessed via a rocky pathway, adding a sense of adventure to the journey. An abandoned villa overlooks the area, lending a mysterious and nostalgic ambiance. The beach itself is a wild, natural haven where waves crash against the shore, providing a perfect backdrop for those seeking a quiet escape amidst nature’s raw beauty. With its white sand, clear blue waters, and surrounding palm trees, it is one of the best beaches on Nusa Ceningan. Also, you’ll usually be alone.

11) Watch The Sunset at Dream Point

On the main road of Nusa Ceningan as you drive past Sea Breeze Cafe (you might have spotted it before) away from the yellow bridge you will see a sign on the right of the road for Twilight Huts and Dream Point. The road leading down to Dream Point is in poor condition so take care if driving a scooter. The tree and swing provide excellent views of the seaweed plantation and the sunset. 

12) Snorkeling with Manta Rays

Snorkeling with Manta Rays is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of the best wildlife encounters we’ve had in our lives. The Manta Rays are majestic and friendly animals with a wingspan of up to 6m. The gentle giants cruise around you while you snorkel amongst them.

It’s easy to join one of the tours when already on Nusa Ceningan, but if you prefer to have the best possible service, we’d recommend booking in advance.

How To Get To Nusa Penida

Generally, below are your options of how to get to the Nusa Islands. There are two main ways to get to Nusa Penida depending on your budget and how many logistics you want to manage. Here are the both options with the cheapest first:

  • Book a fast boat: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option is great as you go direct from Sanur (Bali) to Penida. However you do need to organize your own transportation to the harbour in Bali.
  • Book a fast boat with hotel pick-up: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida but also includes pick-up from your accommodation in Bali in a van. This option from Get Your Guide is a bit more expensive but takes all the hassle out of the transit from your bed in Bali to Nusa Penida.

In this blog post, I’m going to detail the two most popular Nusa Penida day trips from Bali. The first option is the Manta Ray Snorkel Tour. It’s honestly the most amazing experience to swim with gentle Giant Manta Rays. The tour takes you from Bali to Penida to snorkel with mantas but also to snorkel at other locations where you will find beautiful corals and even spot turtles.

The second tour is the BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour, which basically takes you to all of the most iconic viewpoints and beaches on Nusa Penida in one day.

27 Epic Things To Do on Nusa PEnida

Nusa Penida is honestly such an adventurous and fun island. We’d recommend to stay at least three days to soak it all in. You will NOT regret it!

1) Atuh Beach

Atuh Beach is the crown jewel of Nusa Penida Island (along with Diamond and Kelingking Beach). Thanks to the brand-new road it’s easily accessible. It takes an hour to get to Atuh Beach from Toya Pakeh Harbour. It offers a stunning white sand beach surrounded by the huge cliffs and remarkable rock formations. An arch sits directly out from the shore while several islets string off in the distance.

Atuh Beach is usually visited along with the neighbouring Diamond Beach and nearby Rumah Pohon Treehouse.

2) Diamond Beach Viewpoint

The Diamond Beach Viewpoint is located on top of the cliff, from which you can descend to the famous beach below. The viewpoint overlooks a beautiful bay, nowadays already Instagram-famous for the dramatic landscape you can observe from it. Even if you don’t fancy descending all the way down to the Diamond Beach, we’d still recommend to climb few of the famous cliff stairs – they’re simply unlike anything you’ve seen before.

3) Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach has become even more popular than Atuh Beach nowadays, thanks to the iconic staircase, carved into the cliff, that leads to the Beach. The crystal-clear turquoise water, dramatic cliffs, and stunning rock formations make Atuh and Diamond Beaches a photographer’s paradise. Both are undoubtedly among the top sites in Nusa Penida. The Diamond Beach got its name from the diamond-like rock structures scattered around, but there’s one rock that really stands out.

4) Kelingking ‘T-Rex’ Beach Cliff Viewpoint

A secret spot, that’s quickly becoming known due to being recently marked on Google Maps. Instead of hiking down the stairs and enjoying the view with the crowds, head to the right along the cliffs. There is a worn path along the cliff, but no railings, so careful. You’ll find many epic spots to observe the fantastic scenery. The Kelingking Beach is seen here from a unique angle.

This is also an awesome spot for sunset and it doesn’t involve any hiking (if you’re just here for the chill and joy).

5) Kelingking Beach

The Instagram famous coastal cliffscape, which truly does look like a T-Rex (and once it has been seen it cannot be unseen), doesn’t disappoint. We’ll always remember the first time we saw the Kelingking Beach from the viewpoint. It is exactly as seen on thousands of pictures you see online.

You can take a short trek “down the spine of the T-Rex”, the stairs to descend are well maintained. And the views are different from moment to moment.

We’d mark the Kelingking Beach experience number one on entire Nusa Penida. It’s just breathtaking. It makes you feel small, watching crystal clear water slowly form into enormous waves, crashing onto fine white sandy beach. The hike all the way to the beach is quite a thing, but if you respond to wander… nothing beats it.

8) Seganing Waterfalls

It’s hardly a waterfall, especially in the dry season. One of the less visited spots on Nusa Penida, imbedded in stunning cliffside scenery, will offer views like no other.

Downside of this site – very hard to reach the starting point of the trek to the waterfalls, even harder to get to the waterfalls themselves. The steepness of the site exceeds everything else on Nusa Penida, so avoid if you don’t like heights.

9) Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay and its beach are probably the most popular site on Nusa Penida. The Bay faces directly west, so it’s the best beach to enjoy sunset from. It’s also the jump-off spot for snorkel tours. The ocean wildlife here is incredible (go for a casual swim and you might run into a turtle, no kidding). You can actually snorkel and swim in relaxing conditions, unlike on other Nusa Penida’s beaches. You can even turn it into a whole-day experience since you’ll find many sunbeds and small restaurants on-site.

10) Snorkeling at Toya Pakeh

Even though Toya Pakeh is the largest harbour on Nusa Penida, the underwater world is just stunning. Snorkeling at Toya Pakeh is an adventure that shouldn’t be missed. Swimming and snorkeling area are limited to certain areas due to lots of boat and ferry traffic. But the water is clear and as you dip beneath the surface, you’re greeted by a kaleidoscope of colourful coral reefs abundant with tropical fish, including angelfish, parrotfish, and clownfish.

This snorkel spot has a strong current (hence the clean water), so it can only be accessed by boat (too much swimming to get there). Hiring a local fisherman for this adventure should cost you maximum Rp 300,000 for the whole experience (with some bargain, of course).

11) Angel’s Billabong

Angel’s Billabong is one of the magical spots you can’t help but marvel at. A crystal-clear tide pool cascades into the ocean on the east coast of Nusa Penida. Out in that ocean, Manta Rays cruise the coast at leisure. Angel’s Billabong is also one of the spots visited on the Ultimate Nusa Penida Day Trip Tour from Bali.

The Billabong is a remarkable formation. The crystal-clear water allows you to see the patterns and textures beneath the surface. In some areas, the water is deep enough for a little dip! It is a highly photographed spot on Nusa Penida because of how unique the landscape is.

12) Broken Beach

Broken Beach is a beautiful little cove on Nusa Penida Island. The highlight and the reason it’s called “Broken Beach” is the archway that wraps above the bay, allowing water to flow in and out from the ocean. It’s a very easy spot to visit and right next to another famous attraction, Angel’s Billabong.

To this day there is no way down into the cove, but certain boat tours cruise into the cove when the tide and swell are appropriate.

13) Manta Ray Viewpoint

As you finish up at Angel’s Billabong it is common to walk around the corner to Broken Beach. The walk only takes 5 minutes but halfway through the journey is an archway made of trees. When you reach this archway don’t go through immediately! Head up the hill towards the coast on your right and look down into the ocean. This is where the Giant Manta Rays hang out.

We sat on the cliffs watching the Mantas cruise around and surface time and time again. It was a pretty awesome discovery and we have aptly named the cliff, ‘Manta Ray Viewpoint’.

14) Rumah Pohon Treehouse

Rumah Pohon Treehouse is one of the most iconic locations on Nusa Penida Island. After being discovered it quickly became Insta-famous. 

The Treehouse was actually a simple rustic accommodation on Airbnb, but it became famous as a photo spot. You used to be able to book the Treehouse and stay there. Nowadays visitors are allowed and the sole photography business brings more money to the locals running it than Airbnb-ing ever did.

Just a little stroll further is the Thousand Islands Viewpoint that leaves you awestruck. The view is incredible, you can even see a small empty beach sitting at the bottom of the cliff. It’s paradise.

15) Thousand Island Viewpoint (Pulau Seribu)

The Thousand Island Viewpoint offers a breathtaking panorama that leaves visitors in awe. It’s just a little stroll further from Rumah Pohon Treehouse (and the waiting line for the pictures). the viewpoint is perched atop a cliff, providing an expansive vista of the turquoise waters dotted with numerous small islands resembling a thousand islands, hence the name. From this vantage point, you can marvel at the stunning contrast between the deep blue ocean, the lush greenery, and the rocky formations.

16) Banah Cliffs

The view down the coast and cliffs at Banah is striking, so this is another epic viewpoint on Nusa Penida. The drop is insane and the magnificence it creates…

Banah Cliff Point on Nusa Penida is a hidden gem that showcases the unspoiled beauty of nature. It’s nestled along the rugged south-western coastline of the island.

The cliff offers awe-inspiring views of the turquoise waters and dramatic rock formations. If you’re seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience, Banah Cliff Viewpoint should be at the top of your list.

The highlight at Banah Cliffs is the arch out in the ocean. A small rock arch sits out in the turquoise crystal-clear water.

17) Tembeling Beach, Natural Pool & Forest

Tembeling Forest, Pools and Beach are secret gems worth exploring. They’re tucked away at the end of a thrilling scooter journey through the woods. The whole site is adventurous, not crowded, a scene straight from a jungle film.

On the way through the Forest, you’ll go inside a canyon and then move down the winding stairs leading to the Tembeling Natural Pools.

Following the trail further you reach Tembeling Beach. Although it’s not the best beach on Nusa Penida, it’s worth a visit. The beach is flanked by towering cliffs and has a small stretch of sand. While the sea here can be a bit rough, the natural pools offer a safer option for swimming. Be sure to keep an eye on the currents and stay safe.

18) Abangan Hills Viewpoint

When driving down to Suwehan Beach (coming in next), you can spot a small hill on the left. Atop the hill is a nice viewpoint with some trees (not obstructing the views too much). The viewpoint overlooks many beautiful rice fields.

19) Suwehan Beach

Suwehan Beach is the epitome of Nusa Penida’s beaches. It’s still one of the wild beaches, but it’s becoming more popular – the road leading to it is new and there’s a brand-new staircase leading down to the beach. The hike down is less than 20 minutes.

Suwehan Beach is close to Atuh and Diamond Beach, so stop by when exploring those locations.

20) Chill at Amok Beach Sunset Bar and Restaurant

Great way to enjoy Nusa Penida is from the infinity pool atop a cliff, overlooking the vast ocean. You can enjoy afternoon at Amok Beach Club and observe a spectacular sunset from a classy cabana. They also offer treetop nests with gorgeous views over Mount Agung on Bali. It’s the ideal place to kick back and soak up the sun!

21) Saren Cliff Viewpoint

Another astonishing viewpoint over southern cliffs of Nusa Penida – with absolutely no tourists. We’ve visited thrice and were always alone. You could visit it at the same time as Tembeling Forest, Pools & Beach, since it’s almost the same road leading to it.

The drive there is pretty bumpy, but that is nothing new on Nusa Penida. The towering cliffs take your breath away. The highlight is sitting on the edge of cliffs in the middle of nowhere enjoying the grandeur of Nusa Penida.

22) Gamat Bay Snorkeling

Jumping off the boat you’ll realise the water is much colder at Gamat Bay than in other snorkeling points around Nusa Penida. There are numerous fresh-water springs on the sea bottom here where the icy-cold water comes from and mixes with the (otherwise) warm sea water. Because the water is fresh the clarity is much better as well.

The coral structures and rock formations beneath the surface are astonishing. The depth ranges from a few meters (closer to shore) all the way down to a perfect free-diving depth of 5-20 meters.

23) Puncak Mundi (Highest Point on Nusa Penida)

The highest point on Nusa Penida is Puncak Mundi. It’s a beautiful hilly area with series of traditional temples. The height is 521 meters above sea level.
The road leading to Puncak Mundi is incredibly scenic, but also very, very steep.
It’s amazing to visit during prayer or mass ceremony when all the candles are lit and gifts are offered, but ceremonies are held only every 210 days.
In clear weather you can see all the way to Mount Agung on Bali. The windmills nearby serve as a powerhouse.

General information about Puncak Mundi: No entrance fee. Sarongs are mandatory, regardless of long pants you might be wearing, and even for just viewing the temple from the outside. Expect a Rp 20,000 fee for sarong rental. Parking fee is Rp 10,000 per scooter. Foreigners are usually not allowed into the temple, only the surroundings. Expected time needed for a complete visit on top: 10 minutes. 

24) The Chill Beach Club

No minimum spending, no entrance fee, unlimited pool use and chilling after a full day of adventures? The Chill Beach Club is the right answer. You’ll love the relaxed vibe in their beach club, the privacy, quiet music and fantastic food and drinks. Their premises are facing east, so you’ll have beautiful views over neighbouring island Lombok and its highest peaking volcano Mount Rinjani.

25) Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave & Temple

Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave is an important cultural and spiritual site. It is renowned for its sacred atmosphere and intriguing architecture. As the name suggests it’s an actual cave in which the local Hindu people have arranged a temple centuries ago. Pretty unique!

To enter the cave, you must climb through a narrow opening that resembles the mouth of a mythical creature. Inside, you will be mesmerized by the vastness of the cavern and the intricate Hindu shrines and offerings adorning the walls.

The cave is considered a place of prayer and meditation, attracting both local devotees and curious travellers seeking a spiritual experience. Exploring Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave offers a glimpse into the island’s rich cultural heritage and provides an opportunity for quiet contemplation amidst its mystical ambiance.

26) Teletubbies Hill Viewpoint

Honestly, the name is a bit of a down-turner and you really can’t expect what you’ll get here. We still visited, just out of curiosity. And were pleasantly surprised!

Nusa Penida is a small island, but incredibly diverse. We always talk about cliffs and dramatic landscape and rocks, but Teletubbies Hills are entirely the opposite. The unobstructed viewpoint reveals endless rolling hills and rice fields throughout the island, which, due to its diversity, turns out to be really large.

You’ll love this spot even more if you’re flying a drone. It will reveal various contours, canyons and valleys in this area.

27) Pandan Beach (Hike from Crystal Bay)

If popular Crystal Bay has been on your list already and you’re feeling a bit adventurous, there is a path at the end of Crystal Bay that leads up and over the hill. On the other side of the hill is the beautiful Pandan Bay. Arriving here in the afternoon it’s safe to assume you’ll be the only person there.

6) Rumah Pohon Treehouse and Thousand Islands Viewpoint

Difficulty: Moderate

Highlights: The famous Nusa Penida’s Treehouse offers unique views. It’s perched on a cliffside overlooking thousand islands and Kelingking Beach in the distance, providing stunning sunrise views. The Thousand Islands Viewpoint hike on Nusa Penida rewards adventurers with panoramic vistas of the island’s rugged coastline and turquoise waters, showcasing a surreal landscape dotted with numerous small islands in the vast ocean expanse. Hike includes numerous stoney steps going down (and later back up).

7) Crystal Bay to Pandan Beach Hike

Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Highlights: Starting on beautiful, but popular Crystal Bay this short hike of only 820 meters takes you to the neighbouring bay – Pandan Beach. The latter is seldomly visited by foot since it’s only accessible from Crystal Bay – there’s no road leading to it. With the exception of few boats with snorkeling tours there’s a good chance you might be alone on this beach.

8) Angel's Billabong and Broken Beach Trek

Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Highlights: This coastal trek takes you to two famous natural landmarks: Angel’s Billabong, a natural infinity pool, and Broken Beach, a stunning cliff-edged natural bridge over turquoise waters. The trail involves some rocky terrain but is relatively short and accessible.

9) Teletubbies Hill

Difficulty: Easy

Highlights: This easy hike takes you to the top of a hill, showcasing the undulating landscape of Teletubbies Hill, named for its resemblance to the children’s TV show set. Easily accessible with scooter or motorbike.

10) Manta Point Hike

Difficulty: Easy

Highlights: Known for its excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities, Manta Point also offers a short scenic coastal hike. You can trek along the cliffside paths and enjoy views of the rugged coastline and perhaps spot Manta Rays swimming below.

How to get around Nusa Penida Island

Nusa Penida Island is a smaller sister of the neighbouring famous Bali, Indonesia. The island is still quite big and it can take over an hour to cruise from one side to another depending on where your accommodation is located. 

  1. One of the best ways to visit many of the best Nusa Penida’s epic sites in one day is on this Ultimate Nusa Penida Day Trip Tour from Bali – they pick you up in the morning from your accommodation in Bali, take you across to Nusa Penida Island by speedboat, and then bring you back to Bali in the evening after an incredible day of adventures.     Price for rental: Rp 70k – 100k (US$5) a day.
    NOTE! The roads on Nusa Penida are, mildly said, in bad state. Lots of holes, ignorant van drivers, gravel parts… We’d avoid this option if you’re not experienced scooter driver.
  3. The option we once did (and would highly recommend it) is you can rent a car on Nusa Penida with private driver – great option to visit multiple spots safely in a day with a group of friends.

The Manta Rays are majestic and friendly animals with a potential wingspan of 6 meters. They are an important part of the marine ecosystem. The gentle giants cruise around you while you snorkel amongst them, snap some fantastic photos and help to raise awareness about their conservation.

If you love wildlife and nature, snorkeling with manta rays should definitely be on your bucket list. It is an epic and unforgettable experience that will most likely create a core memory!

Many ocean lovers wonder where to snorkel with Manta Rays. Snorkeling and freediving with mantas is an unforgettable experience! It is difficult to explain in words the sensations that arise when you glide underwater with these amazing giants.

Where to Snorkel with Manta Rays

There are many locations around the world where you can swim, dive or snorkel with Manta Rays: Maldives, Mexico, Hawaii, Australia, Fiji, Japan, Ecuador, Galapagos, Costa Rica, French Polynesia, Micronesia, Mozambique … and, obviously, Indonesia.

In Indonesia alone there are 3 regions where Manta Rays continuously swim every year: Raja Ampat, Komodo and Nusa Penida.

Nusa Penida has 2 main spots for snorkeling with Manta Rays – Manta Bay and Manta Point.

Manta Bay is the closest and most of the snorkeling trips are going there. Usually, it is very chaotic and messy, there are a lot of people and boats. Water is deep, there is always some current. This is the spot they will take you to when you make a booking in person (or via phone) when you’re already on Nusa Penida.

The Manta Point is further away along the coast of the island. It’s a much longer journey but you have more chances to see Mantas and definitely fewer people. This trip and experience are much more recommended. Mantas are more frequently seen here for another reason – it’s their cleaning station. The Manta cleaning station is a large rock coming up to about 5 meters from the surface. Manta Rays will come here to swim around coral heads where cleaner wrasse and other small reef fish clean the big marine animals of bacteria and parasites.

However, one should know that encountering Manta Rays means encountering wildlife in its natural habitat. Therefore, it is never 100% guaranteed that you will swim with mantas.

Is it safe to swim with Manta Rays?

Manta Rays have a long, whip-like tail, just like their sting ray cousins. BUT! They don’t have a poisonous tail stinger like many of their relatives. Manta Rays cannot hurt you. So, there’s nothing to worry about.

However, they are very playful. They will often head straight at you out of curiosity and then dart off to the side at the last moment. It’s a majestic experience, but can also be a little bit intimidating – they are, after all, 5 to 6 meters large. 

Wander Responder Tip:
 Ocean water around Nusa Islands is much cooler than one might expect, especially when freediving a little bit deeper. Cold water can be a real turn-off when snorkeling, and you wouldn’t want to miss your Manta Rays encounter just because you’re cold. A thin neoprene top, such as this 0.5mm neoprene Mares Rash Guard, will keep you warm and also protect you from the sun while you snorkel.

You can find so many different tours online it makes it hard to choose from, especially if you don’t know what exactly you’re looking for (except for Manta Rays, obviously). We’ve made it easier for you – we have personally attended 3 of these tours; one the first time we’ve been here, second time as photographers for one of the tour operators and third time when we took our friends for this epic trip.

You want to snorkel on Manta Ray Point

Manta Rays from Cliff Viewpoints around Nusa Penida

Manta Rays can usually be seen from numerous Cliff Viewpoints around Nusa Penida. You can see them from the coastal cliffs at Broken Beach, from Pererenan Cliff & Seganing Waterfalls, Atuh Beach Viewpoint, Angel’s Billabong, Thousand Islands Viewpoint, Saren Cliff Viewpoint, and many others.

They’re spottable right from the surface as they feed on plankton and jellyfish that has been pushed into the bays by the currents. The currents in Nusa Penida are pretty constant, so the locations of where to find Manta Rays are widely known.

Interesting Facts about (Giant) Manta Rays

  • Size: Giant manta rays are the largest species of rays, with a wingspan that can reach up to 9 meters (30 feet). Despite their size, they are often described as floating through the water.
  • Weight: They can weigh up to whooping 3,000 kilograms – 3 tons! (approximately 6,600 pounds).
  • Diet: Manta Rays are filter feeders. That means they eat large quantities of zooplankton, such as shrimp, krill, and planktonic crabs.
  • Habitat: They inhabit the tropical, subtropical, and temperate oceans around the world. They are typically found near the surface or mid-water, but can dive to depths of at least 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) when necessary.
  • Social Life: Mantas are known for their curiosity. They will often interact with divers or snorkelers. Generally solitary creatures can also be found in groups, particularly in areas with abundant food or at cleaning stations where small fish remove parasites from their bodies (the Manta Point we talked about in above paragraph).
  • Reproduction: Unlike most of their scaled and torpedo-shaped cousins who lay eggs, Mantas only give birth to live babies, called pups, once every two to three years, for up to 40 years. Pups take several years to grow into mature manta rays. That means Mantas have a very low reproduction rate. That makes them particularly vulnerable to threats like overfishing.
  • Longevity: The lifespan of a Manta Ray is believed to be about 20 to 25 years, but this could be an underestimate. Many aspects of their lives remain a mystery.
  • Threats and Conservation: Major threats to Giant Manta Rays include overfishing, pollution, habitat loss, and entanglement in fishing gear. They are currently listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
  • Intelligence: Manta Rays are believed to be among the most intelligent of all fish. They have the largest brain-to-body ratio of any fish, and they have been observed exhibiting complex behaviours such as coordinated and cooperative feeding, recognition of self in mirrors, and even social interactions.
  • Scientific Name: The scientific name of the Giant Manta Ray is Mobula birostris.
