Wandering with a Campervan

Campervan travel is almost a national sport in New Zealand. The country is perfectly shaped and equipped for road trips, with excellent campgrounds and countless scenic overnight stops. This is also our favourite way to explore New Zealand. We rented our campervan here. When we visited second time we rented from a different provider, simply to have more comfort and luxury.

Is a Campervan Cheaper Than Hotels?

For two people: often yes.

For solo wanderers: usually no.

The biggest advantage is flexibility rather than savings. Waking up beside Lake Pukaki or beneath the peaks of Mount Cook is an experience many wanderers consider priceless.

This blogpost contains everything you need to know to make Road to Aoraki one of the best memories of your trip.

Two-Week Campervan Budget

  • Solo traveller: NZD 3,000–5,000 (€1,560–2,600)

Let’s assume you’re travelling comfortably. You get yourself flat white coffee (NZD 6 (€3)), breakfast (NZD 18 (€9)), you need fuel to drive around (NZD 15 (€8)), then you get lunch (NZD 20 (€10)), eventually dinner (NZD 35 (€18)), have one beer in the evening (NZD 12 (€6)) and sleep in an accommodation (NZD 180 (€94)).

Daily Total: NZD 286 (€149). And that’s before any major activities.

The biggest budget killers are these – but absolutely worth it, because how many more times will you visit New Zealand?!

The expenses that surprise wanderers most often are:

A single scenic helicopter flight can easily cost more than your accommodation for several nights.
