Seganing Waterfalls and Pererenan Cliff Point on Nusa Penida

We’ve wondered before… Are there still any places left in Bali or the surrounding islands that aren’t overflowing with tourists? Have all the waterfalls and beaches been discovered? And then we came across Seganing Waterfalls.

You’ll like the Seganing Waterfalls only if you have an adventurous hiking soul. The path leading down and up from the waterfall is so dangerous that most people don’t even attempt the climb. This exhilarating hike leads to beautiful little natural pool and thousands small streams. Seganing Waterfall is an actual gentle flowing spring that flows over multiple steps of rocks directly into the ocean in Nusa Penida.

The way down to the waterfall is mildly said adventurous. There are no concrete paths built, so the waterfall never became famous.

Get a local SIM card. While getting around we relied heavily on Google Maps for directions. We recommend Airalo eSIM, so you’ll have data transfer as soon as you land.
Note! Your mobile phone has to be eSIM compatible to use this option.

How to get to Seganing Waterfalls and Pererenan Cliff Point

Seganing Waterfalls and Pererenan Cliff Point are located on the West Coast of Nusa Penida, Indonesia. The island is quite big and it can take over an hour to cruise from one side to another depending on where your accommodation is located.

We’ve pinned the location of Seganing Waterfalls on the map of Nusa Penida below, so you can see where it is in relation to either your accommodation on the island or other points of interest.

  1. One of the best ways to visit many of the best Nusa Penida’s epic sites in one day is on this Ultimate Nusa Penida Day Trip Tour from Bali – they pick you up in the morning from your accommodation in Bali, take you across to Nusa Penida Island by speedboat, and then bring you back to Bali in the evening after an incredible day of adventures. Remember to tell them which spots are on your Nusa Penida Bucket List and they will make it happen!
  2. You can also rent a scooter and drive around the island yourself.
    Price for rental: Rp 70k – 100k (US$5) a day.
NOTE! The roads on Nusa Penida are, mildly said, in bad state. Lots of holes, ignorant van drivers, gravel parts… We’d avoid this option if you’re not experienced scooter driver.
  3. The option we once did (and would highly recommend it) is you can rent a car on Nusa Penida with private driver – great option to visit multiple spots safely in a day with a group of friends.

Cliff Viewpoint

The parking area is just a patch of dirt where you can park your scooter. You can go right and you’ll arrive at Pererenan cliff point. There are other viewpoints along the coast as well. All of them offer spectacular views and a great view of multiple manta rays swimming around in the ocean below.

A small warung on site offers some drinks and snacks, so you can also just enjoy the spectacularity from behind the table.

The sunsets here are unfathomable!

There’s a rickety wooden platform at Pererenan cliff point that you can climb onto for even better views of the cliffs.

The hike down…

Is dangerous. Only the most experienced of trekkers and daredevils should make their way to the Waterfalls.

We’d also like to make clear that dangerous is a relative term. There is
a sacred pool by the waterfall which means locals have been regularly visiting the place, using the same path as the hike we’re here to talk about. They obviously don’t think that walking down the cliff is ‘dangerous’ by any means. It’s dangerous to tourists that are not used to walking such paths.

There’s a sign “Seganing Waterfall” for direction if nobody is around to direct you.

The path starts well, before you reach the part where you have a steep cliff on one side and a rocketed bamboo railing on the other side. The path is rocky, uneven and made by cutting out muddy parts of the cliff. At some points you will have to climb down extremely steep bamboo ladders.

The steepness of this site exceeds everything else on Nusa Penida, so avoid if you don’t like heights or have vertigo.

Seganing Waterfalls

Seganing Waterfalls are really not what the name suggests. There is no huge waterfall like the ones you can enjoy in Ubud, Bali. It’s hardly a waterfall at all, especially in the dry season. It’s by far one of the less visited spots on Nusa Penida, but imbedded in stunning cliffside scenery, with views like no other.

When arriving to the bottom of the cliff you will be standing some 10-15 meters up from the ocean level. Word of caution: do not get too close to the waves – Nusa Penida is known for having monstrous waves that can sweep you off the cliff and into the ocean.

There are 4 sacred sculptures at the site – the locals worship them. Besides, you’ll see 2 pools. One of the pools you can swim and relax in, but the other pool is sacred and for rituals only, so you should not enter it.

Some years ago, the spring water was directly flowing into the pool and then into the ocean. But now a water retainer has been installed. It’s a big blue machine in front of the stone statues. The water first flows into this retainer and then into the pools.

Enjoy. You’ll probably be the only person(s) here.

Make sure to hike back up the cliff with plenty of sunset left. Stormy skies in the distance would also suggest that it is a good time to start heading back. You don’t want to get caught in the middle of the cliff in dusk or rain.

Tips:

  • The best time to visit Seganing Waterfall is during the dry season – from April to October. We’d strongly advise against hiking the Seganing Waterfalls in (or after) rain. Avoid also if the weather forecast is predicting wet weather. That could make the path lethal.
  • The hike is not flip-flop friendly. We’d recommend closed shoes, such as sneakers or Teva’s.
  • Bring water. Even though there’s a new small warung by the parking lot, we’d still recommend you bring water with you already. And bring plenty, the hike is long and arduous.
  • Wear sunscreen. Morning hike and the cliff will be in shadow. Afternoon hike and you’re fully exposed to the sun, so apply before even starting.
  • Bring snacks. You will get tired and hungry after climbing down. Bring some snacks, like chocolate bar, or nuts and crackers.
  • Camera! The views from the place are unbelievable and make for amazing photos. GoPro will be your best friend on this hike!
  • By no means is the Seganing Waterfalls Hike appropriate for children, elderly or unfit visitors.

General information about visiting Seganing Waterfalls:

  • Rp 15,000 parking fee per vehicle – but there’s not always someone there to collect it.
  • No entrance fee.
  • The waterfall is barely known to any tourists. Therefore, you have about 2% chance of encountering other people while you are there. Thus, it doesn’t make sense for the locals to set up a ticketing booth.
  • Hike down to the Falls takes about 30-45 minutes. Same amount of time for return, depending on one’s fitness and pace.
