Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave & Temple on Nusa Penida

Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave is an important cultural and spiritual site. It is renowned for its sacred atmosphere and intriguing architecture. As the name suggests it’s an actual limestone cave in which the local Hindu people have arranged a temple centuries ago. Pretty unique!

To enter the cave, you must climb through a narrow opening that resembles the mouth of a mythical creature. Inside, you will be mesmerized by the vastness of the cavern and the intricate Hindu shrines and offerings adorning the walls.

Get a local SIM card. While getting around we relied heavily on Google Maps for directions. We recommend Airalo eSIM, so you’ll have data transfer as soon as you land.
Note! Your mobile phone has to be eSIM compatible to use this option.

How to get to Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave & Temple

Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave & Temple is located on the northeastern tip of Nusa Penida Island. From the main harbor of Toya Pakeh, it’s approximately a 30-minute drive.

We’ve pinned the location of Guyangan Waterfall on the map of Nusa Penida below, so you can see where it is in relation to either your accommodation on the island or other points of interest.

  1. You can explore the island on your own with rented scooter. Price for rental: Rp 70k – 100k (US$5) a day. NOTE! The roads on Nusa Penida are, mildly said, in bad state. Lots of holes, ignorant van drivers, gravel parts… We’d avoid this option if you’re not experienced scooter driver.
  2. The option we once did (and would highly recommend it) is you can rent a car on Nusa Penida with private driver – great option to visit multiple spots safely in a day with a group of friends.

General information about visiting Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave & Temple:

  • Regardless if you bring your own sarong, you must rent it at the entrance for Rp 10,000 per person. Wearing long pants is not an excuse at this site – sarongs only.
  • There is no official entrance fee, but a supervised donation box. The mandatory donation is Rp 50,000 per person minimum, but you can of course donate more. There’s also a guestbook in which you sign your name upon arrival.
  • There’s a winding staircase up the mountain. You’ll most likely be greeted by a man, sprinkling some holy water on your forehead.
  • The entrance into the Cave & Temple is narrow, but it opens up into a large and long hall. No problem if you’re claustrophobic 🙂 we thought they were joking when they said “Enter here.” and pointed to almost a crack in the rock. The cave is approximately 300 meters long and at least 15 meters high.
  • Foreigners are not allowed near the shrines. Only a walk through the cave is allowed.
  • A walk through the cave is only 5 minutes, flat surface, easy.
  • Arriving earlier in the day means avoiding the crowds of visitors that visit the site later in the day.
  • A fantastic way to get more authentic feeling of local culture and beliefs would be participation (or just observation) of the mass ceremonies held in the Cave & Temple. If you’re interested in such an unforgettable experience, ask the locals and try to attend one of those ceremonies.
  • The Cave & Temple are open to visitors from 7am to 5pm.

Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave & Temple is kind a must for culture and authenticity lovers. You’ll experience Balinese spiritual beliefs at its core.
