Where to Buy Supplies for the
Tongariro Alpine Crossing
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is not just a hike — it’s a full-day journey across an active volcanic landscape that feels more like another planet than New Zealand. One moment you’re walking through barren lava fields, the next you’re staring into a steaming crater, and a few hours later you’re descending past vivid emerald lakes that look totally unreal in colour.
When you begin this crossing, you’re stepping into one of the most dramatic day hikes in the world — and it doesn’t waste any time showing you why.
Tongariro Alpine Crossing trails over nature – besides Mangatepopo Hut (which is a sleeping hut, not a restaurant) and a few toilets along the trail there’s literally no building anywhere close. Therefore, you can not purchase anything along the trail and must come prepared with your own provisions.

Before heading to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, it’s important to stock up on food, water, and any last-minute gear. There are no shops, cafés, or supply points on the trail itself, so everything must be purchased beforehand.
The closest towns with supermarkets, convenience stores, and outdoor supply options are:
National Park Village/Waimarino (closest base for hikers)
Waimarino is the most convenient base for the Crossing and the most popular place to stay overnight before the hike. Here you’ll find (very) small supermarkets and general stores, some cafés and takeaway food options. There’s also outdoor gear hire (boots, jackets, trekking poles). Shuttle operators and booking offices for Tongariro are also located here. It’s compact, but it has everything you need for last-minute supplies before an early start.
Supermarket: Four Square
Turangi (last stop for full supermarkets)
Located about 40–50 minutes from the trail, Turangi is the best place to do a proper grocery shop before the hike. This comes especially handy if you’re travelling around New Zealand’s North Island with a campervan.
In Turangi you’ll find full-sized supermarkets (New World), bakeries and takeaways, pharmacies for blister plasters, sunscreen, etc.
Taupo (largest nearby town, bigger choice)
Taupō is the largest nearby town and a common base for international travellers. It lies around 90 minutes from the trail, depending on the time of the day. Here you’ll find multiple large supermarkets (Pak’n’Save, Woolworths), outdoor stores (for gear upgrades or forgotten items), wide range of cafés and restaurants and plenty of accommodation options for every budget.
It’s further away from the trailhead than Turangi, but offers the most complete provisioning options.
Ohakune (alternative southern base)
On the southern side of the park, Ohakune is another solid option, especially for hikers combining Tongariro with other North Island trails. It offers supermarkets and grocery stores (New World), outdoor shops and rental gear, cafés and bakeries (Rendezvous Dairy). There’s also easy access to shuttle services.
Bonus tip
If you’re staying near the trail the night before (check for my recommendations at “Where to stay”), do your main grocery shop in Taupō or Turangi, then only rely on National Park Village for small top-ups.
Once you leave these towns, options become extremely limited — and there are no reliable places to buy proper hiking food or water near the trailheads themselves.
