Pico 4-Day Itinerary Overview

The island of Pico is perhaps the most interesting of all other nine islands of the Azores archipelago. It’s the second largest in the archipelago, the youngest of all the Azores and the black lava that covers 80% of the island contrasts with the blue of the sea where whales and dolphins live (whom you can greet from a boat). The green of the vineyards, whose landscape is a UNESCO heritage site, is where you can taste a glass of delicious white wine. It’s also a home to the  highest mountain in Portugal, called Mount Pico or as locals call it „Piquinho“.

The magnetism of the enormous mountain will draw your gaze to it every day while you’re staying in the central group of archipelago – it is seen from far away. Ascending Mount Pico is for many people the highlight of their visit. Pico Island also boasts the largest lava tube in Portugal (and yes, you can enter it).

And of course, Pico has numerous natural lava pools, where you can refresh yourself after exploring the island or snorkel and admire the marine life as well.

In this 4-day itinerary we’re reflecting all that Pico has to offer. We’ve added practical proposals, tips, where to sleep, and even where to eat.

Day 1: Ascending Mount Pico

Day 2: Southern Pico (whale watching tour, bomba volcanica & bolo baleeiro, Museu dos Baleeiros, lunch in Lajes, natural pools, Gruta das Torres, Madalena)

Day 3: Northern & Eastern Pico (Ponta da Ilha Trail, Sao Roque, Sao Antonio, Cachorro, Lajido, Santana Trail)

Day 4: Central Pico (Estrada Transversal and Lagoas, Furna do Frei Mathias, Lagoa do Capitão, Lagoa do Capitão Trail, Sao Roque)

How to Get to otoka Pico?

There are no direct flights to Pico from outside the archipelago so it can only be reached by flying from other islands of the Azores.

The cheapest flights to Azores are usually Ryanair flights from Lisbon/Porto to Ponta Delgada (São Miguel) or Lajes (Terceira) but to get the best price you should be flexible with dates and use price comparators such as Skyscanner in Google Flights.

Pico has an airport, very close to the city of Madalena. If coming by plane you are probably coming from Sao Miguel, or another nearby island such as Terceira. Between islands, flights to Pico are generally made on propelerska letala SATA. Letališka koda je PIX, večina letal pa leti iz Ponta Delgade (PDL). Pozor! Vsak dan je drugačen urnik poletov, zato se pri načrtovanju potovanja dobro pozanimajte.

So, once in the archipelago, you can reach Pico in two ways:

• By plane with SataAirlines. You can check timetables and prices on the official website of Sata, the regional airline of the Azores.
• By ferry from one of the neighboring islands of the central group:

From São Jorge: every day of the year, 10,50€, 1-hour trip

From Faial: every day of the year, 3,8€, 30-minute trip (boat stops in Pico)

From Terceira, Flores or Graciosa: only in summer, a couple of days per week. From 32€, 3+ hour trip.

Renting a Car in Pico

Najboljši način za premikanje po Azorih je najem avtomobila. Postopek je enostaven - če imate veljavno vozniško dovoljenje, preprosto stopite v eno od trgovin in za dan (ali dva ali več) najamete avtomobil. Parkirišča po vsem otoku so brezplačna, parkirišča pa prostorna in dobro označena. Tudi vožnja po otoku je zelo preprosta, saj na samem otoku ni veliko prometa, ceste pa so lepo urejene.

I can recommend renting from RentalCars. They have multiple options and are easy to rent at.

Pozor! During the summer months (June, July, August) car prices skyrocket with limited availability. There are also scooter rentals, but oftentimes the higher areas of Pico are covered in fog and have limited visibility.

There are also numerous verified taxi drivers found throughout the island. Many of the hiking trails of Pico are linear (point to point, A –> B), so a taxi driver should be arranged for pick up and drop off. Taxi rentals will cost you anywhere from 80€ to 150€ per day. Note that a taxi can accommodate up to 4 people, vans to up to 8 people, so sharing the expense makes it very affordable.

Izleti za tiste, ki ne želite najeti avta

If you are, for any reason, unable to rent a car, I recommend booking different tours to visit various locations around the island. Why? Because with just taking the public transport to go around you’ll see much less and need more time (and nerves). There is very limited public transportation on the island of Pico. It is nearly impossible to rely on buses that run infrequently and stop at limited locations that are often not interesting to tourists – they’re meant for locals.  Hence booking a tour is an obvious solution and you’ll get the most for your money.

I took some of the tours myself on my first visit to the Azores – found them to be very affordable and well-managed. Usually lunch is included as well, which comes handy.

Pico Itinerary Day 1

Ascending Piquinho – the Pico mountain. It’s such an amazing experience I wrote a separate article about it.

Note that weather in Azores can be quite warm in the summer and Pico is one of the blackest islands in archipelago. Meaning it also gets warmer than other islands. So having a bathing suit and a towel with you is a must for every day!

Pico Itinerary Day 2 (Southern & Western part)

If you’ve been climbing Pico Mountain the previous day then second day should have some more resting activities.

Lajes do Pico: whale and dolphin watching

Different types of cetaceans live in the Azores. Some are residents, others are on their migratory routes depending on the season. Observing whales and dolphins in their natural habitat is one of Pico’s star activities. Seriously, they have by far most observations compared to all other islands.

There are rules for respectful whale watching; approaching the animals with reduced and constant speed, a maximum of 3 boats, never less than 50 meters, and never more than 15 minutes with the same animal. Generally, most agencies stick to those rules, but there will always be some, whose conduct goes against them.

We trusted Aqua Acores and were not disappointed. Their quiosk is just in the centre of Lajes by the bus stop.

The whale-watching tour lasts around 3 hours. A marine biologist will be with you in the boat and will explain lots of intersting information about the cetaceans you’ll see. Everyone hopes to see a sperm whale or some other large whale during the tour. Adjust your expectations – an animal in their natural habitat is a lottery. The animal itself decides whether it comes to greet you or not. Almost all operators advertise that they encourage you to do the tour again for free if no cetaceans are sighted, but it is practically impossible not to see dolphins so in practice that clause is more marketing than anything else.

Pastelaria Aromas E Sabores

After the whale watching tour head to this lovely caffe and try their bombas volcanicas („volcanic rocks“) and bolo baleeiro („whale cake“). Enjoy the pastry while reviving your memories of what you just experienced!

Museo dos Baleeiros – the whaling industry

I highly recommend you visit Museu dos Baleeiros. You can either join a tour or visit the museum on your own.

In the past, whales weren’t just observed, they were hunted. Whaling was a very important economic activity in the Azores, especially on Pico. The numbers are shocking (will not reveal them here, but you’ll find out a lot of information in the museum) and it wasn’t until 1987 that the last sperm whale was hunted on the island of Pico.

They have a short documentary to watch, recorded in the 70’s, about whaling on the island and what it meant for them back then.

Why whaling? Products derived from sperm whales and other whales were oils for lighting, lubricants (mainly for export) and various types of flour (made from whale bones). It is a very nice museum, but also a visit where you will swallow dry many times, especially after having greeted the beautiful and majestic cetaceans in their Atlantic home.

Museum entrance fee is 2€ for an adult and reduced price for child. Taking a guided tour around the museum is free of extra charge.

Grab a Lunch at Espaço Talassa or at Restaurante O Lavrador

Both are great options for a lunch, with Espaço Talassa being located in the main square (they offer food from the menu) and O Lavrador being located a few minutes drive out of town (they offer buffet, which means it’s all you can eat for 15€ with drinks included).  

Dip in a natural lava pool?

If you feel like a refreshing in the ocean, there is a nice natural lava pool in Lajes. It’s more open and larger than most you will find on the island, and with luck, you might even be able to spot a dolphin in the distance!

Gruta das Torres

Gruta das Torres is the largest lava tube in Portugal, with a length of 5150 metres. It is estimated it was formed about 1500 years ago during a volcanic eruption.

This visit must be booked in advance as spaces are limited – the tour is guided. The cave is absolutely one of a kind in Portugal.

The visit follows the cave over a length of 450 metres and it takes about 1 hour.

Entry fee is 10€ and it includes everything for safe exploration of Azorean cave system. More about opening times, guided tours and bookings tukaj.

Madalena

Even though Azorean cities usually aren’t the most interesting thing on each island, you can still find some things to do. Madalena is first and foremost a port. It has some excellent restaurants to try out, but besides that there isn’t much to do. Still, you can enjoy the town for a little bit.  You can visit the main church, the permanent Exhibition of Sperm Whales and Squids, Areia Funca Bathing Area, or the famous Cella Bar. Perhaps stop at the Azores Wine Company for a glass of excellent Pico White Wine.

This day doesn’t have as many activities (or hikes), taken into consideration you ascended Piquinho the previous day. If you skipped Piquinho then by all means use the day to it’s fullest.

otoka Pico Itinerary Day 3 (Northern & Eastern part)

A day to remember! You can always do whatever you want in this itineraries. I’ll give you some sugestions and you pick whatever you’d like to do.

In the morning it’s usually wiser to do a hike than in the afternoon – air is fresher, not so many people on trails and you’ll be fairly hungry by lunchtime. And taking a dip in one of the lava pools will be a must!

Ponta da Ilha Trail (PR3PIC)

By far one of the best trails on Pico we’ve done. It’s a linear trail, A – B, 6 kilometres long. Average trek time is 3 hours.

The official start of the trail is in Calhau, but you can cut around 1,5 kilometres and start in Cais do Galego. The trail goes just by the sea, on sharp lava rocks. It is well marked, uneven and therefore marked as a difficult trail. Strangely – it doesn’t have any ascends, but the surface where you walk is so difficult you end up mentally tired. Still, it is so worth it!

The ending point is Ponta da Ilha. You’ll see the lighthouse from far away – do not walk across it’s gardens and courtyard! The trail will take you around the lighthouse. The lighthouse is a private area.

Ponta da Ilha is a nice little village with natural lava pools (of course). If hungry I highly recommend restaurant “Ponta da Ilha” – insanely delicious seafood!

If you have a car you could save this trail for some other time or do it with a taxi or a tour. Or you can simply do only some part of the trail and return to your vehicle whenever you’d like. The trail is, however, the most interesting right in the middle and it changes a lot.

Take a dip in the pools of Sao Antonio or grab a Lunch in Sao Roque

Sao Antonio is a wonderful spot to have a swim. They have normal pools and natural pools as well, but you’ll also find a fantastic 6-meters-high cliff where people jump off into the ocean. There are toilets and showers. The parking lot is just by the road. All free of charge. There’s a bar across the road.

In Sao Roque you’ll find the whalers museum and a great marina. You can grab a snack or lunch at any of the restaurants. There are natural pools in Sao Roque as well (at the time of our last visit there was an enormous amount of sea grass all over pools, so we skipped a dip here).

Cachorro

In the small village of Cachorro („puppy“ in Portuguese) you can see a volcanic rock in the shape of a dog’s head looking out to sea. But that’s not the main attraction.

Cachorro is a part of the Protected Landscape of the Pico Vineyard Culture. In fact, it is connected to the other two coastal towns, Lajido and Cais do Mourato, through the so-called Caminho da Costa, which we highly recommend you take. Walking from Cachorro to Lajido is like to walk on the history of the youngest island of the Azores with the sea as a companion.

You will walk among some beautiful black-white-red houses surrounded by vineyards.

Lajido

Lajido is a village where the volcanic black contrasts with the lava red. the house stylings are stunning. Pico island being the youngest of the nine Azorean islands (estimated to be ‘only’ about 250,000 years old) has had four recent eruptions (between 1500 and 1700). These recent eruptions, whose lava flows modified the terrain, were called mysteries by the local people because they were incomprehensible and mysterious and could not be explained. When people turned to the priests asking what they were about, they answered that they were “mysteries of the Lord” and so these eruptions were baptized as such in the entire archipelago. There are 4 mysteries that correspond to these 4 recent eruptions and Lajido is part of one of them, the mystery of Santa Luzia, whose eruption occurred in 1718.

Take a stroll through the village and its vineyards. Visit the Casa dos Vulcões where you’ll not only walk out with understanding of everything you see on the surface of the island(s), but you can also use their two simulation centers. One will take you to the center of the Earth and the other one will shake you like an earthquake would. Entry fee is 4€.

Santana – Lajido Trail (PR10PIC) – optional

If you have energy and some extra time there’s a nice trail starting (or ending) in Lajido. Walking past endless vineyards, Mount Pico in the distance, some forest, and a lot of ocean – calming.

The trail is linear but feel free to turn around at any point. The whole trail is 8.7 kilometres long and would take you 2,5 hours in total (one way since it’s linear).

The trail is well marked with yellow-red stripes. You’ll see them clearly on black lava rocks. What’s amazing on this trail (on Ponta da Ilha Trail PR3PIC as well) are solidified flows of lava, so clearly visible it’s just stunning.

otoka Pico Itinerary Day 4 (Central part)

Finishing the island strongly – with the most remarkable parts.

Estrada Transversal (EN3) and Lagoas

Said to be the most beautiful road in Portugal and I couldn’t agree more. It’s a 23-kilometres-long road linking Madalena and São Roque. It’s also the longest straight road in the Azores – and by straight I actually mean straight. 9 kilometres long straightness.

The EN3 passes through the interior of the island. You will have Pico mountain by your side all along. Eventually the most beautiful lakes on the island will start to appear – Lagoa do Caiado, Lagoa do Capitão, Lagoa do Paul, Lagoa do Peixinho, Lagoa Rosada and Lagoa Seca.

You can stop at any of the lakes, enjoy the views and serenity. The further you drive, the more São Jorge will be visible across the ocean.

Furna do Frei Matias – optional

Optional and not for the light-hearted.

The cave is named after a hermit, Frei Mathias („brother Mathias“), who lived in this cave in fear of pirates. The cave is 1,000 meters long, but most of the cave is difficult and caving equipment and experience is necessary. However, the entrance area is easy to visit and because of its location (on Estrada Transversal) very popular. It’s also free of charge.

Lagoa do Capitão

Probably the most famous lake on the island.

Not as vast and beautiful as some of the lagoons you will find on São Miguel, but it is still a site to be seen with Mount Pico reflecting right nearby.

If you’re a hiker, this is where you start one of the most interesting hikes on Pico as well.

Lagoa do Capitão Trail (PR13PIC) – optional

Another insane linear trail. Starting from Lagoa do Capitão the first 2,5 kilometres of the trail are almost completely flat, on a gravel road. You’re walking past numerous Azorean junipers – they are so large you’d never guess it’s actually a juniper tree. The next 3 kilometres are the most fun. You’re descending 600 meters in one hour so that might be hard on your knees.

But the trail… pastures with gazing cows, barely visible trail on the grass, lush green forests, Azorean blueberries, grasped in a hug of mother Nature all along. Just wow.

The official end of the trail is in Sao Roque, but if you can have a taxi arranged then they can pick you up at termoelectrica. It will save you additional 3 kilometers that are not that interesting.

This is not a trail where you’d leave your car at the parking lot and just go make a few kilometers. As mentioned, first few kilometers are basically on a gravel road so not as interesting as one’d hope. But when it gets interesting the descend is so steep you’d make yourself a hard work coming back up to your vehicle.

You can finish this day with another visit to São Roque or Sao Antonio natural pools.

Pozor! The central part of the island (Estrada Transversal, Lagoas and trails) doesn’t have any restaurants or shops. There’s only nature. If you’re planning on hiking you’d be wise to bring food and beverages with you.

You could definitely see the main attractions in Pico in fewer days, but even stopping for a swim in one of the gorgeous natural lava pools has its charm.

Pico je eden večjih otokov v Azorskem arhipelagu. Znan je po svojem vinu in najvišji gori na Portugalskem. Ker je otok zelo vreden obiska, odgovarjamo na nekaj pogostih vprašanj o Picu (in na tista, na katera še niste pomislili). Dodajamo tudi nekaj koristnih nasvetov in rešitev.

Kje je otok Pico?

Pico se nahaja v Azorskem arhipelagu in je del njegove osrednje skupine skupaj z otoki Graciosa, Sao Jorge, Faial in Terceira.

Pico je dolg približno 46 kilometrov, širok 16 kilometrov in ima površino 445 km2. To pomeni, da je drugi največji otok v arhipelagu, vendar ga lahko z avtomobilom v celoti obkrožimo v približno treh urah (brez postankov). Njegova najvišja točka leži na 2351 metrih nadmorske višine v kraju Piquinho - najvišja točka na Portugalskem.

Kdaj obiskati otok Pico?

Menimo, da je kateri koli otok na Azorih najboljši v poletnih mesecih ali pozno spomladi (maja, junija, julija, avgusta ali septembra). Vidljivost bo najboljša, temperatura vode najtoplejša in na splošno bodo ugodnejši pogoji za glavne dejavnosti. Zdi se, da je tudi Pico precej toplejši od Sao Miguela (če ga boste obiskali prej). Takoj ko boste izstopili iz letala (zlasti v poletnem času), boste lahko občutili to dodatno toploto.

Če je sončno, se lahko ohladite v enem od naravnih bazenov na Picu, saj je to odličen način za ohladitev.

• Temperatura zraka se v povprečju giblje med 14° pozimi in 26° poleti.
• Temperatura vode se v povprečju giblje med 16° pozimi in 25° poleti.

Če še niste vedeli, lahko vreme na Azorih prinese od vsega po malem. Sonce, oblaki, veter, dež, vse, kar želite, je na Azorih na voljo. Ni zabavno, če se odpravite na potovanje in ne morete opraviti tistega, kar ste si zadali. Seveda lahko Azore obiščete tudi zunaj teh mesecev in si privoščite čudovito potovanje! Vreme pride in gre, zato bodite pripravljeni na vse vrste razmer.

Kako priti na otok Pico?

Do otoka Pico lahko pridete na več načinov, odvisno od tega, od kod prihajate. Vse te informacije vam prepuščam spodaj.

Z letalom: Pico ima letališče v bližini mesta Madalena. Če prihajate z letalom, verjetno prihajate s Sao Miguela ali drugega bližnjega otoka, kot je Terceira. Med otoki na Pico običajno letijo propelerska letala SATA. Letališka koda je PIX, večina letal pa leti iz Ponta Delgade (PDL). Pozor! Vsak dan je drugačen urnik poletov, zato se pri načrtovanju potovanja dobro pozanimajte.

S trajektom: Na Pico vozijo trajekti s skoraj vseh sosednjih otokov. Vozni redi trajektov so na voljo na spletni strani Atlanticoline - edini trajektni prevoz na Azorih. Trajekti iz otokov Faial in Sao Jorge vozijo vse dni tekom poletja. Iz otoka Faial vožnja traja 30 minut, iz otoka Sao Jorge pa 90 minut. Pri načrtovanju potovanja preverite njihov vozni red, saj se pogosto spreminja!

Uporabne mobilne aplikacije

Priporočam vam nekaj mobilnih aplikacij, ki jih lahko namestite na svoj telefon - koristile vam bodo na potovanju v Pico:

•   SpotAzores: tukaj si lahko ogledate vse obstoječe spletne kamere na različnih točkah otokov in preverite, kakšno je vreme. Ker je vreme zelo spremenljivo in lahko na enem območju otoka dežuje, na drugem pa je sončno, je ta aplikacija najhitrejši način, da se prepričate in izognete nepotrebnim potovanjem.
•  Windy: nujna aplikacija na naših potovanjih, še bolj na Azorih in Madeiri. Omogoča prikaz napovedi dežja, oblakov, vetra itd. in vam pomaga načrtovati dneve glede na vreme. Običajne napovedi niso 100-odstotno zanesljive. Prikazuje tudi spletne kamere, ki so na voljo na določenem območju.
•  GoogleMaps: uporabljamo ga za shranjevanje/razvrščanje vseh krajev, ki jih želimo obiskati/smo jih obiskali, in kot GPS v najetih avtomobilih. Ogledate si lahko mnenja drugih ljudi o krajih, fotografije, jedilnike restavracij, telefonske številke krajev, da jih lahko kontaktirate, itd.
•  Maps.me: aplikacija, podobna Google Maps, vendar deluje brez povezave (čeprav lahko Google Maps deluje tudi brez povezave) in v številnih primerih vsebuje informacije, ki jih Google Maps nima, zlasti poti. Uporabno, kadar koli se odpravljate na pot, da se orientirate, prenesete pot iz uradne Azorske strani o pohodniških poteh (kliknete na Prenosi -> GPS), ipd. Pozor! Pri uporabi storitve maps.me morate zemljevide prenesti vnaprej, torej pred dejanskim prihodom na cilj, sicer lahko traja nekaj časa, da prenesete (in raziščete) nove zemljevide. Ti zemljevidi so shranjeni v vaši mobilni napravi.

Kako se znajti na otoku Pico

Otok Pico nima dobrega javnega prometnega sistema za popotnike. Avtobusi vozijo neredno in se ne ustavljajo na zanimivih mestih - namenjeni so domačinom.

Vendar obstaja rešitev! Lahko najamete avto, skuter ali taksi/vodiča/turo za en dan.

Najboljši način za premikanje po Azorih je najem avtomobila. Postopek je enostaven - če imate veljavno vozniško dovoljenje, preprosto stopite v eno od trgovin in za dan (ali dva ali več) najamete avtomobil. Parkirišča po vsem otoku so brezplačna, parkirišča pa prostorna in dobro označena. Tudi vožnja po otoku je zelo preprosta, saj na samem otoku ni veliko prometa, ceste pa so lepo urejene.

Priporočam najem od RentalCars.com. Imajo več možnosti in celoten proces je zelo enostaven.

POZOR! V poletnih mesecih (junij, julij, avgust) cene avtomobilov zaradi omejene razpoložljivosti skokovito narastejo. Na voljo je tudi izposoja skuterjev, vendar so višji predeli Pica pogosto v megli in imajo omejeno vidljivost.

Če boste na otoku ostali več dni, je najem avtomobila najboljša izbira. Tako si lahko otok ogledate v svojem tempu in izberete kraje, ki bi jih radi obiskali v času bivanja na Picu.

Najem skuterja

Imam odlične izkušnje z447 Pico. Zelo profesionalno, očistijo tudi notranjost čelad. Zagotovite si vnaprejšnjo rezervacijo!

Pričakujte, da boste plačali med 30 € in 40 € na dan.

Taksi storitve

Na otoku so tudi številni preverjeni taksisti. Nekatere pohodniške poti na otoku Pico so linearne (od točke do točke, A -> B), zato se je treba dogovoriti s taksistom kje vas odloži in nato pobere. Najem taksija vas bo stal od 80 € do 150 € na dan. Upoštevajte, da lahko taksi sprejme do 4 osebe (večji do 8 oseb), zato je delitev stroškov zelo ugodna.

Izleti za tiste, ki ne želite najeti avta

Javni prevoz na otoku Pico je zelo omejen. Skoraj nemogoče se je zanašati na avtobuse, ki vozijo redko in ustavljajo na omejenih lokacijah.

Če imate malo časa, je najbolje rezervirati celodnevni ogled otoka Pico. Tukaj je nekaj zelo priporočljivih izletov:

• Jezera in vulkani (celodnevni izlet)
• Pokušina vin in hrane
• Ostali izleti

SIM kartice na Azorih

Preden preberete ta del, se vprašajte, ali na Azorih dejansko potrebujete kartico SIM. No, če vas ne moti, da nimate interneta ves čas, boste verjetno našli brezplačen WiFi v restavracijah, nakupovalnih središčih, hotelih itd. Če nameravate uporabljati le maps.me aplikacijo, ki jo je mogoče uporabljati brez interneta, bi to moralo zadostovati.

Če pa boste podatke potrebovali za premikanje, klicanje taksija, prevajanje besed v portugalščino ali preprosto iskanje dodatnih informacij, si boste za potovanje po Azorih morda želeli kupiti kartico SIM.

Kako kupiti kartico SIM na Azorih

Azorsko predplačniško kartico SIM lahko kupite osebno na nekaterih mednarodnih letališčih, v prodajalnah mobilnih operaterjev, trgovinah s priročnimi izdelki ali vnaprej prek spleta.

Ponudniki na letališčih imajo običajno višje stroške in slabše podatkovne ponudbe, zato to ni najboljša možnost. Pozor! Na vseh letališčih ni trgovin s karticami SIM (zlasti na manjših letališčih), zato imejte to v mislih! Letališče Pico nima te možnosti.

Zato priporočam, da kartico SIM kupite neposredno v trgovini mobilnega operaterja. Za nakup boste morda potrebovali potni list.

To pomeni tudi, da ne boste imeli podatkov takoj ob prihodu. Če želite biti ves čas povezani, lahko uporabite eSIM.

This is the island people usually have in mind when they say „Azores“. It is very much worth visiting, so we’re answering to some frequently asked questions about Sao Miguel island. Adding some useful tips and solutions here as well.

Where is Sao Miguel island?

Sao Miguel is located in the Azores archipelago, and is part of its eastern group, together with the Santa Maria island.

In terms of dimensions, Sao Miguel is approximately 65 killometres long and 15 killometres wide, with an area of 744 km2. Its highest point is 1105 meters above sea level, in Vara Peak. The island is of entirely volcanic origin.

When to visit Sao Miguel?

We’d say that any island in the Azores is best in the summer months or late spring (May, June, July, August or September). The visibility will be best, water temperature warmest and generally more favorable conditions for the main activities. Hydrangeas also bloom this season – and Sao Miguel has a very broad spectre of hydrangea colours.

How to get to Sao Miguel Island?

There are several ways to get to Sao Miguel, depending on where you come from. I leave you all that information below.

Z letalom: Sao Miguel has an airport, very close to the city of Ponta Delgada. Between islands, flights to Sao Miguel are generally made on SATA propeller planes. The airport code is PDG. Most planes fly here from mainland Portugal’s capital Lisbon, many also from Porto, but you can also find some international flights landing here.

S trajektom: The connection between islands is good depending on the groups – the eastern group (Sao Miguel and Santa maria) are quite far from the other islands. Ferries are therefore not so popular, as the drive is long. The ferry schedules can be found on the Atlanticoline – the only ferry service of the Azores. Ferries from and to Santa Maria should be running pretty consistently throughout the day. To Santa Maria it’s a 3-hour ride across the sea. From Sao Miguel to Sao Jorge it’s a 11-hour ride and only drives 3 times a week. When scheduling your trip it’s best to look out at the transfers first.

•  Windy: nujna aplikacija na naših potovanjih, še bolj na Azorih in Madeiri. Omogoča prikaz napovedi dežja, oblakov, vetra itd. in vam pomaga načrtovati dneve glede na vreme. Običajne napovedi niso 100-odstotno zanesljive. Prikazuje tudi spletne kamere, ki so na voljo na določenem območju.
•  GoogleMaps: uporabljamo ga za shranjevanje/razvrščanje vseh krajev, ki jih želimo obiskati/smo jih obiskali, in kot GPS v najetih avtomobilih. Ogledate si lahko mnenja drugih ljudi o krajih, fotografije, jedilnike restavracij, telefonske številke krajev, da jih lahko kontaktirate, itd.
•  Maps.me: aplikacija, podobna Google Maps, vendar deluje brez povezave (čeprav lahko Google Maps deluje tudi brez povezave) in v številnih primerih vsebuje informacije, ki jih Google Maps nima, zlasti poti. Getting Around in Sao Miguel

Sao Miguel has a semi-good public transpostation system for travelers. Buses are, however,  irregular and don’t always stop at interesting spots – they’re mainly meant for locals.

Vendar obstaja rešitev! Lahko najamete avto, skuter ali taksi/vodiča/turo za en dan.

Najboljši način za premikanje po Azorih je najem avtomobila. Postopek je enostaven - če imate veljavno vozniško dovoljenje, preprosto stopite v eno od trgovin in za dan (ali dva ali več) najamete avtomobil. Parkirišča po vsem otoku so brezplačna, parkirišča pa prostorna in dobro označena. Tudi vožnja po otoku je zelo preprosta, saj na samem otoku ni veliko prometa, ceste pa so lepo urejene.

I can recommend renting from RentalCars.com. They have multiple options and are easy to rent at. On their webpage you can search to rent via Ilha Verde, the islands’ main car rental company.

NOTE! During the summer months (June, July, August) car prices skyrocket with limited availability. There are also scooter rentals, but oftentimes the higher mountains of Sao Miguel (Vista do Rei, Lagoa do Fogo, Furnas) are covered in fog and have limited visibility.

If you’re staying on the island for several days then the car rental is your best choice. That way you can see the island at your pace and pick and choose which places you would like to visit during your time on Sao Miguel.

Najem skuterja

I have a good experience with stopping by at „Nunho Carvalho“ and renting a scooter on arrival. Expect to pay between 30€ and 40€/day. Another option in Ponta Delgada is „Azores Easy Rent“.

Taksi storitve

There are also numerous verified taxi drivers found throughout the island. Some of the hiking trails of Sao Miguel are linear (point to point, A –> B), so a taxi driver should be arranged for pick up and drop off. Taxi rentals will cost you anywhere from 80€ to 150€ per day. Note that a taxi can accomodate up to 4 people, larger vans up to 8 people, so sharing the expense makes it very affordable. Sometimes you’ll stand at the taxi point with other people you won’t know and you can share a ride with them.

Sao Miguel Tours for Those Not Renting a Car

There is very limited public transportation on the island of Sao Miguel. It is nearly impossible to rely on buses that run infrequently and stop at limited locations.

Ponta Delgada and the rest of Sao Miguel have many options to grab a snack. As for what to eat on Azores, seafood and fish are naturally good options. Be sure to try cracas in lapas, ali hobotnico. Faial Island is one of the smaller islands in Azores archipelago. Nonetheless very much worth visiting, here we’re answering to some frequent questions about Faial Island (and those you haven’t thought of yet). Adding some useful tips and solutions in as well.

Where is Faial island?

Faial Island is located in the Azores archipelago, and is part of its central group, together with the islands of Graciosa, Sao Jorge, Pico and Terceira.

In terms of dimensions, Faial is approximately 21 km long by 14 km wide, with an area of 172 km². Its highest point is 1043 meters above sea level, in Cabeco Gordo.

When to visit Faial?

We’d say that any island in the Azores is best in the summer months or late spring (May, June, July, August or September). The visibility will be best, water temperature warmest and generally more favorable conditions for the main activities. Hydrangeas also bloom this season – and Faial isn’t called „the Blue Island“ for no reason.

How to get to Faial Island?

There are several ways to get to Faial Island, depending on where you come from. I leave you all that information below.

Z letalom: Faial has an airport, close to the city of Horta. Between islands, flights to Faial are generally made on SATA propeller planes. The airport code is HOR, most airplanes fly in from Ponta Delgada (PDL).

S trajektom: There are ferries from almost all neighbouring islands to Faial. The ferry schedules can be found on the Atlanticoline – the only ferry service of the Azores. Ferries from Pico should be running pretty consistently throughout the day. From Pico it’s  a quick 30-minute ride across the sea.

Pico Day Trip option: If you are planning a day trip from Pico, that is certainly possible to complete. Since there are a bunch of ferries going back and forth each day, it should be no problem at all hopping on one at the Madalena port in the morning and then heading back at day’s end.

Just be sure to check the schedules as you do not want to end up missing the last ferry back! During a day trip (depending on what time you plan to start and end the day) you should be able to complete at least two attractions I mention in my Faial 4-day itinerary!

Some recommendations and warnings to enjoy Faial…

… and to make your trip a pleasant one and not a detraction from the island

•  The natural lava pools almost all have freshwater showers but don’t use shampoos and soaps with chemicals in those showers. A quick shower to get the salt off and you’re done.
•  Don’t allow the disturbance, pollution and destruction of seabird nesting habitats.
•  Never try to touch or feed a wild animal – don’t be an accomplice to animal abuse!
•  Do not buy handicrafts made from sea animals or extracted from the sea (e.g. dolphin teeth, turtle shells, shark jaws, sperm whale ivory, …). The ivory trade, currently the only valuable product of the sperm whale, is still an argument for hunters. Buy local handicrafts made from alternative materials such as wood, stone or vegetable ivory.
•  If you visit the island in summer and enjoy the sea, remember that sometimes you may encounter a jellyfish (aguaviva) or a Portuguese caravel whose sting is painful and dangerous. The good thing is that these last ones float and are easily detectable, but in case you see one, get out of the water immediately and warn other people of their presence. In case you have been stung by either of them, it is very important that you follow these official recommendations: do not scratch the area of the sting (to prevent the venom from spreading); do not clean with fresh water or alcohol, clean only with sea water and very carefully; and in case the sting is a Portuguese dogfish sting, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

• Respect other people and the island: don’t play your music loudly on the beach or natural pool (if you want to listen to music, wear headphones), don’t leave trash, don’t throw cigarette budds, etc. Leave the beach better than you found it (if you find plastic, pick it up!).
• In some areas bathing can be dangerous due to strong currents. Don’t be too brave. There’s usually a flag (red, yellow or green) indicating the level of danger at certain time and beach/lava pool. Red means ‘don’t swim’ and I highly suggest you respect that indication.
•  On the trails, you will sometimes pass through closed wooden gates, which you will have to open and, very importantly, close again, as they are usually the boundaries of land with cows grazing inside.

Getting Around in Faial

Faial doesn’t have a good public transpostation system for travelers. Buses are irregular and don’t stop at interesting spots – they’re meant for locals.

Parkirišča po vsem otoku so brezplačna, parkirišča pa prostorna in dobro označena. Tudi vožnja po otoku je zelo preprosta, saj na samem otoku ni veliko prometa, ceste pa so lepo urejene.

NOTE! During the summer months (June, July, August) car prices skyrocket with limited availability. There are also scooter rentals, but oftentimes the high mountain of Faial (Caldeira) is covered in fog and has limited visibility.

If you’re staying on the island for several days then the car rental is your best choice. That way you can see the island at your pace and pick and choose which places you would like to visit during your time on Faial.

I have a great experience with stopping by at „Scooter Rental“ and renting a scooter on arrival. Expect to pay between 30€ and 40€/day.

Taksi storitve

There are also numerous verified taxi drivers found throughout the island. Some of the hiking trails of Faial are linear (point to point, A –> B; for example 10 Volcanoes Trail), so a taxi driver should be arranged for pick up and drop off. Taxi rentals will cost you anywhere from 80€ to 150€ per day. Note that a taxi can accomodate up to 4 people, so sharing the expense makes it very affordable.

Faial Tours for Those Not Renting a Car

There is very limited public transportation on the island of Faial. It is nearly impossible to rely on buses that run infrequently and stop at limited locations.

Where to eat on Faial?

Although there aren’t as many options as one’d like, there are still some very good restaurants you can stop at.

Faial isn’t among the largest islands in Azores, so you should be able to visit the below attractions in 2 to 3 days. Of course you could go on a day trip to Faial as well and save the time, but that way you wouldn’t have enough time to do the longer hikes (worth doing) or additional activities.

Faial 3-Day Itinerary Overview

Day 1: Horta (Marina, Forte de Santa Cruz, Peter Cafe Sport, Church of the Holy Saviour, Torre do Relogio, Miradouro da Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, Monte da Guia Geosite, Praia Porto Pim, Porto Pim Whaling Factory, Porto Pim Aquarium, walking trail)

Day 2: West Faial (Morro de Castelo Branco, Capelo Handicraft Centre, Miradouro da Ribeira das Cabras, Praia da Faja, Capelinhos, Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre, Farol da Ponta dos Capelinhos, Porto do Comprido)

Day 3: Central Faial (Caldeira, Salao Windmill, Botanical Garden of Faial)

How to get to Faial?

There are several ways to get to Faial Island, depending on where you come from. I leave you all that information below.

Z letalom: Faial has an airport, close to the city of Horta. Between islands, flights to Faial are generally made on SATA propeller planes. The airport code is HOR, most airplanes fly in from Ponta Delgada (PDL).

S trajektom: There are ferries from almost all neighbouring islands to Faial. The ferry schedules can be found on the Atlanticoline – the only ferry service of the Azores. Ferries from Pico should be running pretty consistently throughout the day. From Pico it’s a quick 30-minute ride across the sea.

From Pico – a Day Trip option: If you are planning a day trip to Faial from Pico, that is certainly possible to complete. Since there are a bunch of ferries going back and forth each day, it should be no problem at all hopping on one at the Madalena port in the morning and then heading back at day’s end.

Just be sure to check the schedules as you do not want to end up missing the last ferry back! During a day trip (depending on what time you plan to start and end the day) you should be able to complete at least two attractions I mention in this Faial 3-day itinerary!

Renting a Car in the Azores

The best way to get around the Azorean islands is to rent a car. The process is easy – if you have a valid licence you simply walk into one of the stores and rent-a-car for the day (or two or more). Parking all around island is free of charge and parking lots are spacious and well marked. Driving around is very simple as well since the island itself doesn’t have a lot of traffic and the roads are nice.

I can recommend renting from Ilha Verde. They have multiple options and are easy to rent at.

You can also look for a scooter rental. There aren’t many options in Horta, but they can be rented for just 20€ per day.

Faial Tours for Those Not Renting a Car

If you are, in any reason, unable to rent a car, I recommend booking different tours to visit various locations around the island. Why? Because with just taking the public transport to go around you’ll see much less and need more time (and nerves). Public transportation is not as common in the Azores as one might like. Hence booking a tour is an obvious solution and you’ll get the most for your money.

I took some of the tours myself on my first visit to the Azores – found them to be very affordable and well-managed. Usually lunch is included as well, which comes handy.

Here are three highly recommended tours that will help you see a large amount of the sites I listed in this Faial itinerary:

Faial Itinerary Day 1 (Horta)

Horta town is a great base with lots of accommodation and restaurant options. Any other destination on the island is less than 40 minutes drive by car. Horta was founded in the 1400’s and is Faial’s largest urban centre and has a number of things to see and do.

Marina

The marina is a must-see, conveniently located in the city centre. This world-renowned marina has become a favoured stop on cross-Atlantic sea trips and is a linking point for international regattas. Many companies offer whale watching tours, fishing expeditions and sightseeing cruises from the marina.

A practice, which began centuries ago due to sailors’ superstitions, has become a tradition in the marina. Sailors paint their boats’ symbols or logos around the marina in order to ensure their boats and crews arrive safely at their destination. Be sure to wander through this free outdoor art gallery to see the artwork of crews from around the world. The art is everywhere along the marina sea walls and walks, including along the outside walls of the fort which guards the marina.

Forte de Santa Cruz

The fort was built between the 15th and 17th centuries and was the main fortification of the island. It became a national monument in 1947. Today, the fort is a luxury hotel called Pestana Pousadas de Portugal. The company operates hotels in some of Portugal’s most historic buildings.

Continue past the fort to what some consider yachting’s greatest watering hole.

Peter Cafe Sport

For over 100 years, this has been a great place to enjoy your meal. It is worth a visit just for the decor alone. Beautiful walls of coloured yacht flags and ensigns allow you to travel the world from your chair with your favorite drink in hand.

Visit the Scrimshaw Museum to see the largest private collection of Scrimshaw artwork in the world. Scrimshaw art is engravings on and carvings from whale bone, cartilage or ivory, the byproducts of the whaling industry. The artists were the whalers. The museum pieces date back to the 19th century.

Church of the Holy Saviour

In the centre of Horta’s downtown, the imposing Igreja do Santissimo Salvador is one of the largest churches in the Azores. The former Jesuit College was abandoned around 1760 when the Jesuits were expelled from Portugal. Other buildings of the college have become the town hall and the Museum of Horta. The museum is noted for its collection of fig wood art, a traditional handicraft.

Torre do Relogio

This clock tower was used as a watchtower in the 1800’s. Climb the tower to get a bird’s eye view of Horta. Florencio Terra Garden, a beautiful park with a gazebo, is just across the street. It’s a perfect spot for a rest while enjoying the view over the city and neighbouring island Pico.

Miradouro da Nossa Senhora da Conceicao

This viewpoint of Horta lays on the main road. The 30-metre high cross and massive statue of the Virgin Mary stand out on the horizon. The view over Horta is breathtaking. On a clear day, look east to the islands of Pico, Sao Jorge and Graciosa. Much of eastern Faial can also be seen.

Close by, about 2.5 kilometres away, the Botanical Garden of Faial conserves and protects local plants.

Monte da Guia Geosite

Highlight of Horta – the geosite includes the volcano Monte da Guia, Porto Pim Beach and the volcanic cone Monte Queimado, plus all the sand dunes, slopes, cliffs, bays, inlets and marine caves around and within this area. This Azores Geosite is also two protected areas of the Faial Nature Park, protecting plant and animal species native to the Azores.

Porto Pim Beach

Beautiful, wide sandy beach is very popular with locals and tourists alike. There are washroom and shower facilities available (free of charge). Several restaurants and bars are on the streets around.

Porto Pim Whaling Factory

This museum shows the complete processing of a sperm whale. Its exhibits explain whale oil and grease extraction and the methods of handling the meat, bones and blood. The Whaling Factory museum contains most of the actual equipment used by the station during its business operations from 1941 to 1974. It is also the home of the Azores Sea Observatory, a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental education and activities in relation to ocean science.

Aquário do Porto Pim

The aquarium showcases fish species found in the waters around the Azores. You can learn about the biodiversity of the local ocean  here. The aquarium promotes environmental awareness and assists with the recovery of sensitive fish and marine animals. Fish raised here have been sent to public aquariums around the world.

The building of the aquarium used to be a whale oil extraction plant which operated until 1942.

Walking Trail – Entre Montes (PRC8 FAI)

This circular route links all the places in the Monte da Guia geosite. It is an easy 3.4-kilometre walk, taking about 1.5 hours.

You can park in the large parking lot for Porto Pim Beach (free of charge). You start the walk on the paved path at the back of the Porto Pim Whaling Factory. Walk up to the top of Monte da Guia and Our Lady of Guia Chapel. Follow the trail markers to wind down to the south side of the bay, past the Porto Pim Aquarium, Dabney House and the Porto Pim Whaling Factory. Wander across the beach, along Rua da Rosa. Finally, head up over the top of Monte Queimado and back to the parking lot.

Piscina Lajinha and Poca da Rainha

These natural pools are about halfway towards the airport. They are natural hollows along the coastline filled with seawater and continuously refreshed by wave action. For a refreshing dip, take the steps down to the pools from the cliffs above.  Be careful as the rocks are sharp and jagged. The rocks formed when rapidly flowing lava hit the cold ocean water and cooled very quickly. The cliff has beautiful caves and arches. This section of coastline is also a geosite of the Azores Geopark. The whole shoreline is visible from the beautiful viewpoint at Ponta Furada.

Faial Itinerary Day 2 (Western part)

We’re heading towards more interesting parts now – nature.

Morro de Castelo Branco

This huge, imposing, rock monolith at the ocean’s edge is visible from kilometres away. It forms a peninsula with plunging cliffs that extend into the water. It is a volcanic dome which was created from lava which was so thick that it didn’t flow away before cooling.

Climbing the rock peninsula is not permitted as the whole area is an important nesting area for several species of birds. It has been protected as both a Faial Nature Reserve and an Azore’s Geosite.

To reach the parking area, either drive, turning off the main road and following official signs, or hike to it on the Morro de Castelo Branco Trail. From the parking area (free of charge), walk the path to the amphitheatre and on to the base of the dome.

Capelo Handicraft Centre

The handicraft museum’s yard has a beautiful view of the ocean. Inside the small white stucco building, traditional island handicrafts are displayed and available for purchase. Find carvings in bone and whale’s tooth, fig tree pith (the centre core of the fig tree), straw embroidery, old lace and much more.

Miradouro da Ribeira das Cabras

This viewpoint provides an amazing view over the peninsula of Capelo, the youngest area of Faial (10,000 years old). The peninsula has about 20 volcanic cones of various sizes. On a clear day you can see Vulcao dos Capelinhos, Cabeco do Canto, Cabeco Verde and Cabeco do Fogo. Look down to Faja, whose land area was created by lava flows from the volcanoes of the peninsula.

Praia da Faja

Faja Beach and the nearby children’s playground are popular with summer vacationers. This rocky, black coastline showcases the sharp texture of rocks created when lava cools quickly in contact with water.

Capelinhos

Faial’s youngest volcano was created during a 13-month eruption episode from September 1957 to October 1958. The eruption even created an additional island off the coast! Enough material was ejected from the volcano to join the new island to the mainland, increasing the area of Faial by 2.4 square kilometres. This area is one of the geosites of the Azores Geopark.

Wander the area, walking on the material jettisoned from the volcano, and admire the cliffs along the edges of the volcano. There are a number of things to see. Parking and entry to the volcanic area is free of charge, but Interpretation Centre is payable (but worth it!).

Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre

The Interpretation Centre’s exhibit explains the Capelinhos Volcano eruption, the formation of the Azores islands, and the various kinds of volcanic activity in the world. The centre was built underground to minimize its impact on the landscape allowing visitors a better idea of how the area looked in the days shortly after the eruption in 1957.

Information on the history of Azorean lighthouses including the adjacent Farol da Ponta dos Capelinhos is also on display.

Entrance fee is 10€ for adults and less for children and seniors.

Farol da Ponta dos Capelinhos

Climb the lighthouse for a unique view of the area. The Capelinhos Point Lighthouse, built in the late 1800’s, was operating when the volcanic eruption began. As the eruption continued, workers cleared away the volcanic ash. Eventually the volume of ash became so large, it was necessary to abandon the area. Despite surviving the eruption intact, the lighthouse never operated again.

There’s usually a queue to enter the lighthouse, but it’s worth the wait if you’ve got time. You need a ticket to enter, which is the same ticket as the one in the Interpretation Centre.

Cool off in the natural pool just 5 minutes walk from Capelinhos. You can also launch a kayak to take a look at the volcano from the ocean!

This point, Porto do Comprido, was the edge of Faial Island before the eruption. It is amazing to see how much additional land area was added to Faial as a result of the 1957 eruption.

Faial Itinerary Day 3 (Central part)

The highlight of Faial.

Caldeira

The most famous of all attractions on Faial is the MASSIVE Caldeira right in the middle of the island.

This caldeira is the crater of the volcano that created the island of Faial. It’s really a site to see – 400 meters deep and 2 kilometers in diameter, immense greenery in every direction. Within the crater itself you will see a smaller crater as well as some lakes too.

You have the opportunity to hike around the rim of the Caldeira. During a 2,5 – 3 hour hike you will walk for 8 kilometers and be able to see the crater from all different angles as you enjoy this incredible natural attraction.

If you don’t want to hike, no worries – you can just spend some time taking in the view for as long as you may like.

NOTE! You are not allowed to head down into the Caldeira. Also, the Caldeira is known to attract a fair share of low cloud coverage from time to time. If it’s cloudy you won’t see much, but as I’ve mentioned before, weather in the Azores changes rapidly. There’s a parking lot on spot, free of charge.

Salao Windmill

This red, wooden windmill operated between about 1929 and 1969 to grind the grain of the local farmers. There are many of these small structures on Faial in various states of repair. These windmills played an essential role in Faial’s important cereal industry in the late 19^th and 20^th centuries.

Botanical Garden of Faial

Learn about the importance of conservation and protection of the biodiversity of the Azores and the world. Opened in June 1986 with 1.4 acres, the botanical garden is now over 3.7 acres. The visitor centre has an auditorium, exhibition room and snack bar. The Botanical Garden also manages a natural rehabilitation area of almost 15 acres nearby.

São Jorge is one of the larger islands in Azores archipelago. Since it’s very much worth visiting we’re answering to some frequent questions about São Jorge island (and those you haven’t thought of yet). Adding some useful tips and solutions in as well.

Where is São Jorge?

São Jorge is located in the Azores archipelago, and is part of its central group, together with the islands of Graciosa, Faial, Pico and Terceira.

In terms of dimensions, São Jorge is approximately 53 kilometres long and 8 kilometres wide, with the total area of 243 km². Its highest point is 1053 meters above sea level, in Pico da Esperanca.

When to visit São Jorge?

We’d say that any island in the Azores is best in the summer months or late spring (May, June, July, August or September). The visibility will be best, water temperature warmest and generally more favorable conditions for the main activities. Hydrangeas also bloom this season.

I recommend some mobile applications that you can install on your phone – they will be useful for your trip to São Jorge:

•   SpotAzores: here you can see all the existing webcams in different points of the islands to see how the weather is. Because the weather is very changeable and it can be raining in one area of the island and sunny in another, this app is the fastest way to make sure and avoid unnecessary trips.
•  Windy: essential app in our trips, even more so in the Azores and Madeira. It allows you to see forecasts for rain, clouds, wind, etc. to help you plan your days based on the weather. The usual forecasts are not 100% reliable. It also shows the available webcams in certain area.
•  GoogleMaps: is the one we use to save / classify all the places we want to go / have gone and as GPS in rental cars. You can see other people’s opinions of the places, photos, restaurant menus, phone number of the places to contact them, etc.
•  Maps.me: application similar to Google Maps but works offline (although Google Maps can also work offline) and in many cases has information that Google Maps does not have, especially trails. Useful whenever you are going to do a trail, to orient yourself, download the route from the uradne Azorske strani o pohodniških poteh (kliknete na Prenosi -> GPS), ipd. Pozor! Pri uporabi storitve maps.me morate zemljevide prenesti vnaprej, torej pred dejanskim prihodom na cilj, sicer lahko traja nekaj časa, da prenesete (in raziščete) nove zemljevide. Ti zemljevidi so shranjeni v vaši mobilni napravi.

Some recommendations and warnings to enjoy São Jorge…

… and to make your trip a pleasant one and not a detraction from the island

• The natural lava pools almost all have freshwater showers but don’t use shampoos and soaps with chemicals in those showers. A quick shower to get the salt off and you’re done.
•  Don’t allow the disturbance, pollution and destruction of seabird nesting habitats.
•  Never try to touch or feed a wild animal – don’t be an accomplice to animal abuse!
•  Do not buy handicrafts made from sea animals or extracted from the sea (e.g. dolphin teeth, turtle shells, shark jaws, sperm whale ivory, …). The ivory trade, currently the only valuable product of the sperm whale, is still an argument for hunters. Buy local handicrafts made from alternative materials such as wood, stone or vegetable ivory.
• If you visit the island in summer and enjoy the sea, remember that sometimes you may encounter a jellyfish (aguaviva) or a Portuguese caravel whose sting is painful and dangerous. The good thing is that these last ones float and are easily detectable, but in case you see one, get out of the water immediately and warn other people of their presence. In case you have been stung by either of them, it is very important that you follow these official recommendations: do not scratch the area of the sting (to prevent the venom from spreading); do not clean with fresh water or alcohol, clean only with sea water and very carefully; and in case the sting is a Portuguese dogfish sting, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

•  Respect other people and the island: don’t play your music loudly on the beach or natural pool (if you want to listen to music, wear headphones), don’t leave trash, don’t throw cigarette buds, etc. Leave the beach better than you found it (if you find plastic, pick it up!).
• In some areas bathing can be dangerous due to strong currents. Don’t be too brave. There’s usually a flag (red, yellow or green) indicating the level of danger at certain time and beach/lava pool. Red means ‘don’t swim’ and I highly suggest you respect that indication.
• On the trails, you will sometimes pass through closed wooden gates, which you will have to open and, very importantly, close again, as they are usually the boundaries of land with cows grazing inside.

Getting Around in São Jorge

São Jorge doesn’t have a good public transportation system for travelers. Buses are irregular and don’t stop at interesting spots – they’re meant for locals.

Najboljši način za premikanje po Azorih je najem avtomobila. Postopek je enostaven - če imate veljavno vozniško dovoljenje, preprosto stopite v eno od trgovin in za dan (ali dva ali več) najamete avtomobil. Parkirišča po vsem otoku so brezplačna, parkirišča pa prostorna in dobro označena. Tudi vožnja po otoku je zelo preprosta, saj na samem otoku ni veliko prometa, ceste pa so lepo urejene.

I can recommend renting from RentalCars.com. They have multiple options and are easy to rent at.

Pozor! During the summer months (June, July, August) car prices skyrocket with limited availability. There are also scooter rentals, but oftentimes the high mountains of São Jorge are covered in fog and have limited visibility.

If you’re staying on the island for several days then the car rental is your best choice. That way you can see the island at your pace and pick and choose which places you would like to visit during your time on São Jorge.

I have a great experience with stopping by at „Azorean Way Rent a Car“ and renting a scooter on arrival. Expect to pay between 30€ and 40€/day.

Taksi storitve

There are also numerous verified taxi drivers found throughout the island. Many of the hiking trails of São Jorge are linear (point to point, A –> B), so a taxi driver should be arranged for pick up and drop off. Taxi rentals will cost you anywhere from 80€ to 150€ per day. Note that a taxi can accommodate up to 4 people, so sharing the expense makes it very affordable.

São Jorge Tours for Those Not Renting a Car

There is very limited public transportation on the island of São Jorge. It is nearly impossible to rely on buses that run infrequently and stop at limited locations.

If you’re short on time it’s best to book a full-day tour of São Jorge. Here are some highly recommended tours:

4-day São Miguel itinerary with tips

This Sao Miguel itinerary is split into 4 days. Each day you get to explore a different part of the island. This itinerary highlights the best and most amazing sights on Sao Miguel.

The island is relatively small, so it is possible to base yourself in one location – that is usually Ponta Delgada, the largest city and capital. You can, however, find cheaper, better, but also more remote accommodations in other towns around the island.

This guide will take you through 3 days of driving where you will explore the western, central, and eastern parts of the island as well as a day exploring Ponta Delgada where you can stroll the streets or take one of the many tours to see whales.

How To Get To São Miguel?

Sao Miguel is the largest island in the Azores and is home to the largest international airport in the Azores. The Ponta Delgada Airport (PDL) is serviced by many European Airlines and domestic Portuguese flights from the mainland as well as Madeira. There are also Transatlantic flights available with regular flights to the United States and Canada.

The airport is centrally located and is a mere stone’s throw away from Ponta Delgada (about 10 minute drive).

There are taxis available at the airport, but you need to call them first, which isn’t really handy (nor cheapest).

If you want to have a transportation to the city (or your accommodation) reserved in advance and waiting for you, I recommend this service.

Renting a Car in São Miguel

The best way to get around the Azores is to rent a car. The process is easy – if you have a valid licence, you simply walk into one of the stores and rent-a-car for the day (or two or more). Parking all around island is free of charge and parking lots are spacious and well-marked. Driving around is very simple as well since the island itself doesn’t have a lot of traffic and the roads are nice.

I can recommend renting from Ilha Verde. They have multiple options and are easy to rent at.

São Miguel Tours for Those Not Renting a Car

If you are, for any reason, unable to rent a car, I recommend booking different tours to visit various locations around the island. Why? Because with just taking the public transport to go around you’ll see much less and need more time (and nerves). Public transportation is not as common in the Azores as one might like. Hence booking a tour is an obvious solution and you’ll get the most for your money.

I took some of the tours myself on my first visit to the Azores – found them to be very affordable and well-managed. Usually lunch is included as well, which comes handy.

Here are three highly recommended tours that will help you see a large amount of the sites I listed in this Sao Miguel itinerary:

Western São Miguel - Day 1

I always suggest to do the hiking or walking parts first thing in the morning. In the afternoon time it might get cloudier, or you’re tired already and not so eager to seize the day.

Coal Aqueduct

Start your trip to the old Coal Aqueduct that cuts through the epic landscape. Take the time to explore the area and walk amongst the old pillars.

During the hydrangea season, the perpetual greenery is broken up with the wonderful blue flowers that grow all over the island and line most of the roads and paths.

Visiting the Coal Aqueduct should take no longer than 30 minutes and is the perfect introduction to Azorean nature.

Miradouro da Boca do Inferno

Miradouro da Boca do Inferno is one of the most famous vantage points in Sao Miguel and one of the best Azores photography locations. It is the view you think of when you hear someone reference “the Azores”.

The picture-perfect viewpoint is easily accessible as you drive west from Ponta Delgada.

You can drive relatively close to it, but then you will need to ditch your car at the roadside car park (parking is free of charge) and head up to the view on foot.

The trail is well marked out and easy to follow, and there are likely to be plenty of other people to follow.

Once you reach the viewpoint, you will be taken aback by the stunning views of the four main lakes of the western part of Sao Miguel – Lagoa Santiago, Lagoa Rasa, Lagoa Azul, and Lagoa Verde (barely seen from this viewpoint).

This is the perfect place to spend an hour or less wandering around and soaking in the views.

This is a very easy hike. You can extend it to Lagoa das Eguas Norte, it will take you additional hour and many beautiful views all around the western part. More about hikes in Sao Miguel tukaj.

Vista do Rei (Kings View) and the abandoned Hotel Monte Palace

Vista do Rei (Kings View) is an impressive view that looks over Lagoa Verde, Lagoa Azul, Sete Cidades and the surrounding crater.

The view gained its name and its fame when a visiting king from mainland Portugal came to the islands and declared this view his favorite on the island and set up camp by the viewpoint.

Beside the main road is the abandoned Hotel Monte Palace, a 5-star hotel from the 1980s that stayed open for a bit over a year. The hotel has been stripped of nearly everything of value by locals, but it’s a fun place to explore for about 30 minutes. Head to the roof for one of the best views in the Azores. The roof lifts you much higher than the Vista do Rei viewpoint and gives an amazing panoramic view of Lagoa Verde and Azul. It is important to be careful while exploring the building as it is in a state of disrepair – some parts are dangerous.

The building has now been sold (to a Chinese company) and will soon get a purpose in life. Expect to spend around an hour or less enjoying Vista do Rei and exploring the hotel.

Lunch in Sete Cidades

Head to the small town of Sete Cidades for lunch and to explore the lakes close up. There are a few restaurants in the little town serving local food and drinks. Parking is free.

I can recommend two restaurants:
* Sau Nicolau – has a buffet option of unlimited good food, with unlimited drinks included (careful there!), for around 15€
* Lagoa Azul – menu options, anything from steaks to bifanas to burgers and chips, prices varying from 5€ to 20€. By the lake!

You’ll spot people kayaking on the lakes in the summertime, but nobody swims…

Spectacular Sea Stacks at Mosteiros

On the northwestern shore of Sao Miguel is the village of Mosteiros, a seaside village that is home to stunning islets and sea stacks and lava pools that sit just off the shore. You can park at the beginning of the town; there’s a big parking lot on the left side of the road. Parking is free. There are parking places further in town as well, but often occupied – the town is very small.

Take the time to check out the view of the islets and explore the natural lava pools around the beach or simply spend time sitting on the black sandy beach as you recover from lunch. There’s a bar at the beach too. Fancy a swim?

Warm dip in the Atlantic Ocean – Ponta da Ferraria

Just a few minutes’ drive away is Ponta da Ferraria. It’s located on the western shore of Sao Miguel. Here you will find a natural hot spring in the ocean – it feels like a hot tub during low tide.

There’s no entrance fee, it’s opened 24/7 all year round. Big parking lot is free too, and it’s just about 4-minute walk away from the ocean.

Careful during high tide and moody weather – the power of the ocean is might, it can get dangerous. Same goes for Mosteiros lava pools.

End the Day in Capelas

The small town of Capelas on the north shore is the perfect place to end the first day of exploring the island of Sao Miguel.

Located on Sao Miguel’s north, it’s the ideal place to walk around and check out the azure waters.

Head to the Elephants Trunk viewing point to check out the natural feature where the cliff looks like an elephant’s trunk dipping into the ocean.

Midadouro do Porto das Capelas is a wonderful viewpoint and is a great place to take a quick swim in the Atlantic Ocean.

Central São Miguel - Day 2

Day two of the itinerary will take you through the main sights of the central part of Sao Miguel.

Pineapple Plantation (Plantacoes de Ananases A. Arruda)

Located just outside of Ponta Delgada is a pineapple plantation. Pineapples are one of the most important products of the Azores.

The pineapple was bought over from Brazil to be cultivated on the islands and has transformed into its own unique pineapple. Instead of taking 6 months to grow, the Azorean pineapple is grown over a 2-year period although it ends up being smaller than the average pineapple and is much sweeter.

The plantation is entirely organic and a great way to spend an hour learning all about how they are grown on the islands with greenhouses taking you through each phase of growth. There is also a shop where you can purchase all manner of pineapple-based goods.

Take it from me, the pineapples in the Azores are phenomenal.

There are many different pineapple plantations around Ponta Delgada, the one mentioned above is just one of them. All of them are free of charge for a visit.

Pico da Barrosa – Lagoa do Fogo

Pico da Barrosa is the best place to get an epic vantage point of Lagoa do Fogo.

The large crater lake is used as a reservoir to provide the lower-lying towns with fresh water. Because of this reason, swimming is illegal in the lake.

The view over the lake is impressive. You can park (free) a few meters below the best viewpoint.

There’s a visible path that leads all the way down from the viewpoint to the lake. The walk is short, about 20 minutes. It’s the way back that gets you sweating!

On cloudier days, you may find visibility to be poor. However, the weather in the Azores moves quickly and the view should clear up in a short amount of time.

Caldeira Velha

Caldeira Velha is a hot spring area rich in volcanic minerals (such as sulfur). It is located amidst incredible nature, has some amazing waterfalls and hot springs that you can relax in. Reservation is needed, parking lot is free, the entrance fee to the hot springs (and to visit the area) is 10€. There are showers, toilets and lockers inside.

I highly recommend!

Miradouro da Santa Iria

Don’t forget to stop at a stunning viewpoint. Parking lot is free of charge of course, and a minute-long walk will bring you to Miradouro da Santa Iria. Beautiful!

Porto Formoso and Praia dos Moinhos

A small village with a beautiful black sand beach – Praia dos Moinhos. There is a spacious parking lot (free of charge) for all visitors close to the beach. Besides the beach there’s a beautiful waterfall nearby (Cascata do Porto Formoso) with amazing walk through lush green forest. During hydrangea season the flowers are just stunning.

You can grab a lunch at the beach, I recommend O Moinho Terrace Cafe (cheap and delicious food), but there are other restaurants too.

Cha Gorreana Tea Factory

The Azores is the only place in Europe where there are tea plantations. The Cha Gorreana (Tea Factory) is a wonderful place to learn about cultivating tea on the islands. They produce green and black teas. As you walk around the factory, you will learn all about tea production and how the tea is cultivated and dried. The visit is free of charge.

After walking around the production center, you can spend some time sitting in the café tasting the different teas. Degustation is complimentary.

You can also walk around the plantation and even take a short hike (30 minutes altogether) to the nearby waterfall where they get the water for the plantations.

There is also a toilet and a gift shop where you can purchase local teas to take home.

Our Lady of Peace Chapel

Head to the hills above Vila Franco do Campo to the Our Lady of Peace Chapel.

The stunning chapel is situated on top of a hill with a beautiful, symmetrical staircase leading up to it. The impressive grounds are covered in colorful flowers that contrast the black and white lava stone structure. The chapel was a former hermit’s residence and its secluded, hilltop location provides an amazing view over the bay and out towards the islet of Vila Franco do Campo.

Vila Franco do Campo is another interesting place to stop off for lunch and I suggest checking out Atlantico Grill for awesome fresh seafood right on the harbor.

Option in Vila Franca do Campo – visit Ilha do Vila Franca do Campo

A beautiful little islet is located just a short boat-ride from the coast. A small, volcanic islet is a place of natural beauty and an epic nature reserve that is home to plenty of amazing flora and sea birds. The crater of the volcano has filled in with seawater and the crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming and diving.

The islet is a protected area, but with limited access around it it’s open for visitors. It has enclosed beach, so you can swim in the ocean but stay safe at the same time.

During the summer months, there is a regular boat service to the island but because it is a nature reserve, the number of people who are able to visit daily is limited to ensure that there is minimal impact on the island’s ecosystem.

The price for the boat-ride is 12€ and that’s the only charge you’ll get. The ride takes around 15 minutes. You can stay on the islet as long as you want, most visitors stay for an average of 1,5 – 2 hours. In a quiosk where you’ll purchase the boat ticket you can also rent a snorkeling equipment (pay 20€ and get 10€ back when you return the equipment) and water (1€ for 1,5L bottle).

Eastern São Miguel - Day 3

The eastern side of Sao Miguel is a hive of volcanic activity with plenty of thermal pools and springs to keep any nature lover entertained. The area is home to the highest concentration of hot water springs in the whole of Europe.

As you drive into the region, you will often see the steam from the springs rising into the air from all around.

I recommend you first head towards Furnas. Furnas is a town inside a volcanic crater. A beautiful viewpoint stands just above it (or better say at the edge of the crater) – Pico do Ferro. You could also walk down from here to the lake.

Lagoa do Furnas and Park Grena

Head to the shores of Lagoa das Furnas where you will find geothermal, natural hot springs bubbling away.

The entrance to the whole hot springs area is 2€. It’s well worth the visit, even if just to take a stroll around the lake.

Cozidos: With wooden walkways running above the springs, you can get up close to these volcanic springs and really feel the heat (and smell) from them. Buried in the ground around the springs, Azoreans cook the local, famous dish Cozido das Furnas. The dish is a lot of meat and root vegetables and is layered in a large pot, covered, wrapped up, and then buried in the ground where it is left to slowly cook over multiple hours in the volcanic heat.

At the springs, you can often see workers coming to dig out the finished pots and bury the next batch (that usually happens between 11am and 1pm).

Just next to these cozido hot springs is a marvelous Park Grena. Stunning waterfalls, incredible forest of Japanese cedars, even their very own hot spring. I highly recommend a visit. Entry fee is 10€ and there’s a quiosk to purchase your ticket at the entrance. Hike: moderate.

Parking lot for the area is free of charge, with toilets just at the entrance.

Parque Terra Nostra

Located directly in Furnas town is Parque Terra Nostra – a must-visit when exploring the eastern side of Sao Miguel.

Home to large thermal baths and impressive botanical gardens, you can spend hours walking around the lively gardens and taking some time to relax in the thermal pools. The thermal baths were originally built in the 1780s and have been the highlight of many people’s visits to the islands over the years.

The warm (orange) waters are rich with minerals that help relax the body and restore energy levels, help travelers to keep their energy levels boosted in order to keep on exploring the island with delight.

The botanical gardens provide the perfect place to relax as you wander aimlessly through the extensive gardens. The semi-tropical climate of the Azores and the rich and fertile soil make it the optimal place to grow many different kinds of plants and trees. There are thousands of different kinds of flora on display with some of the trees actually being hundreds of years old.

To fully enjoy the park and hot pools, I recommend around 3 hours. The entrance fee is around 10€.

Chow down on Cozido das Furnas

A trip to the east of the island and Furnas would not be complete without enjoying the famous Cozido dish cooked in the heat of the volcano. The dish is comprised of various meats and sausages, like chicken, pork, beef, blood sausage, and chorizo. It also contains vegetables like potatoes, carrots, cabbage, yams, and kale. This is layered in a large pan and then buried and cooked in the ground for 5-7 hours. The rich and flavorful dish is truly impressive and makes for a great filling lunch.

Head to Restuarante Banhos Ferreos to try Cozido das Furnas, or make a reservation at Terra Nostra Garden Hotel (where the park and pools are as well).

Salto do Prego

As you travel east along the south coast of the island, take time to check out a small village of Faial da Terra. A short hike into one of the valleys brings you to Salto do Prego, an impressive waterfall and natural pool.

A quick (45 minutes) and moderate hike to the waterfall makes this little stop worthwhile (in addition to the insane scenery you will witness as you walk to it).

You can also enjoy swimming in the natural pool beneath the waterfall, though it does get a bit chilly. If you are keen on photography, this waterfall makes for impressive long exposures.

Lighthouse Arnel

As you drive around the eastern shore of the island, take the time to stop at Lighthouse Arnel.

The lighthouse is located on the edge of a cliff and provides a dramatic viewpoint to look out over the Atlantic Ocean and breathe in the fresh air while stretching your legs.

The walk to the lighthouse is steep but worthwhile as the views are impressive.

The lighthouse itself is an interesting building and was the first one built in the Azores. It is possible to take tours of the lighthouse on Wednesdays and learn the history free of charge.

Miradouro Ponta do Sossego

This view is one of the most epic spots on Sao Miguel and is a must to add to your 4 days in the Sao Miguel itinerary.

The viewpoint sits high above majestic cliffs and is so otherworldly and jaw-dropping that you’ll think you have been transplanted to another part of the planet.

This area is well-marked and there are a lot of spots where you can picnic or stroll along the high coastal cliffs to get views or just take in the insane scenery that Sao Miguel has to offer.

There are various plants and flowers that line the paths here and it is an epic place for eager photographers.

Ponta Delgada - Day 4

Spend the day exploring the small capital of the Azores, Ponta Delgada, and maybe take a sustainable and ethical tour to see the whales and dolphins out in the Atlantic.

Ponta Delgada started off as a small fishing village, the capital of the island then was located in Vila Franca do Campo. After a devastating earthquake the capital of the island was moved to Ponta Delgada.

Gruta do Carvão

Explore the lava tubes at Gruta do Carvão. They are the largest on the island at over 1.5km (over 5000ft) long although history suggests that these tubes may have been much longer in the past.

First discovered in the 17^th century, the lava tubes are spectacular displays of natural geography where various rock formations have formed and the basalt walls have changed color due to oxidization.

To visit the caves, it costs around €5. There are two options of tours available- a shorter, easier 200-meter tour where group sizes are around 15 people or more. 

The second option is a more difficult 800-meter tour where there are only 2-4 people on the tour. It is recommended to book in advance to avoid disappointment of the cave either being closed or tours booked up.

Portas da Cidade

Check out the city gates – Portas da Cidade. These 18th-century arched gates are the iconic structure of the city and are featured on most postcards.

The gates were originally situated by the harbor however; they were moved to Goncalo Velho Square at a later date. Made out of classic Azorean lava stone, the white and black gates are aesthetically beautiful and provide a nice contrast against the clear blue skies.

Ponta Delgada Churches

There are plenty of churches in Ponta Delgada worth checking out. Made out of black basalt (lava stone), the black and white churches are impressive structures and are beautifully designed.

The outside beauty is matched by the ornate interiors. Each church is as impressive as the other and it’s worth checking out all of them.

Forte de Sao Bras de Ponta Delgada

The fort and military museum are located on the seafront and is still used by the Portuguese Navy.

The historical museum provides a great look into Portuguese military history as well as an insight into the Portuguese empire’s colonization in Africa. It highlights the many fights for independence from the many colonized countries. There is also a room dedicated to notable veterans in Portuguese history.

Take a Whale and Dolphin Watching Trip from Ponta Delgada

Take a dolphin and whale watching tour out to sea to encounter some of the world’s most impressive sea creatures.

The Azores is home to many whales and dolphins, as well as being on the migratory path of others.

During April and May, you will have the highest chance of seeing the largest number of species, including blue, fin and sei whales along with bottlenose and Atlantic spotted dolphins. However, year-round you can see the amazing, deep-diving sperm whale. You might also be lucky enough to see turtles.

This three-hour tour will offer you the chance to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat while a marine biologist teaches you about the animals. Don’t leave your camera behind!

4-day São Jorge itinerary with tips

São Jorge island in the Azores archipelago feels untouched and rugged, and for its natural beauty sees fewer tourists than it should. This Azorean island is diverse and blessed with stunning mountains, typical fajãs, steep cliffside hikes, natural swimming pools, and charming villages.

The island is known as the “Brown Island” for its rugged cliffs of shaded browns. The island is also nicknamed “Dragon Island,” and is actually how the island was named. Legends say that Saint George (São Jorge) was able to slay a fierce dragon who lived on the island. Saint George is tied to many Christian stories as a “dragon slayer.” Today, the island is said to resemble a sleeping dragon.

The volcanic island of São Jorge is also known for the unique landforms of fajãs. Fajãs are a Portuguese word for the area at the foot of volcanic slopes where the land meets the sea. Fajãs are flat plains that are formed with a combination of volcanic activity and coastal erosion. São Jorge is said to be home to over 70 fajãs and the island is constantly changing.

São Jorge is also known for its distinct cheese.

How To Get To São Jorge?

There are no direct flights to São Jorge from outside the archipelago so it can only be reached by flying to other islands of the Azores.

The cheapest flights to Azores are usually Ryanair flights from Lisbon/Porto to Ponta Delgada (São Miguel) or Lajes (Terceira) but to get the best price you should be flexible with dates and use price comparators such as Skyscanner and Kiwi.com.

Once in the archipelago, you can reach São Jorge in two ways:

By plane with Sata. You can check timetables and prices on the official website of Sata, the regional airline of the Azores.

By ferry from one of the neighboring islands of the central group:

• From Pico: every day of the year, 10,50€, 1 hour trip

• From Faial: every day of the year, 15,50€, 1,5 hour to 2 hour trip (boat stops in Pico)

• From Terceira or Graciosa: only in summer, a couple of days per week. From 32€, 3 hour trip.

Renting a Car in São Jorge

The best way to get around the Azores is to rent a car. The process is easy – if you have a valid licence, you simply walk into one of the stores and rent-a-car for the day (or two or more). Parking all around island is free of charge and parking lots are spacious and well-marked. Driving around is very simple as well since the island itself doesn’t have a lot of traffic and the roads are nice.

I can recommend renting from Ilha Verde. They have multiple options and are easy to rent at.

Pozor! During the summer months (June, July, August) car prices skyrocket with limited availability. There are also scooter rentals, but oftentimes the high mountains of São Jorge are covered in fog and have limited visibility.

There are also numerous verified taxi drivers found throughout the island. Many of the hiking trails of São Jorge are linear (point to point, A –> B), so a taxi driver should be arranged for pick up and drop off. Taxi rentals will cost you anywhere from 80€ to 150€ per day. Note that a taxi can accommodate up to 4 people, so sharing the expense makes it very affordable.

São Jorge Tours for Those Not Renting a Car

There is very limited public transportation on the island of São Jorge. It is nearly impossible to rely on buses that run infrequently and stop at limited locations.

If you’re short on time it’s best to book a tour of São Jorge. Here are two highly recommended tours that will help you see a large amount of the sites I listed in this São Jorge itinerary:

São Jorge Itinerary - Day 1 (Central)

I always suggest to do the hiking or walking parts first thing in the morning. In the afternoon time it might get cloudier, or you’re tired already and not so eager to seize the day.

Miradouro do Canal

A fantastic viewpoint, easily accessible by any vehicle. It offers splendid views on the southern coast of São Jorge and in good weather the neighbouring island Pico as well.

Pico da Esperança

Start your morning with some light exercise on the climb up to Pico da Esperança, the highest peak on the island. Although you can hike up (about 10 kilometres on a gravel road), it is possible to drive near to the crater and walk just the final few metres. From the edge of the crater, you can spot two lagoons and Pico Island in the distance. And if the sky spares you – an entire cordillera of green volcanic craters.

Despite its “hopeful” name, this mountain was the scene of a tragic accident where a Sata (the Azorean airline) plane went down on December 11, 1999. It was Sata’s only tragic accident, where the plane on a flight from Ponta Delgada (São Miguel) to the island of Flores with a stopover in Faial hit this mountain. All 35 people on board died and here is a Memorial where tribute is paid to the victims. In the Memorial, there is a plaque with the names of all the deceased. A tragedy that we are told was due to weather conditions (a lot of low fog and high wind) associated with a probable overconfidence of the experienced pilot. Talking to local people who remember the day of the accident in the winter of 1999, they told us that the front part of the plane remained embedded in the mountain for a couple of weeks. The fog was so thick that tragic day in December that nobody knew what was happening because nothing could be seen. People who were nearby started to see papers flying (from inside the plane) and said that the sound of the plane seemed deafening, too close, and too low. A story that makes the hairs on the back of our neck stand on end.

Miradouro de Fajã do Ouvidor

Before heading down to the fajã, or on your way back up, look out for the viewpoint by the side of the road. This is a great spot to get a bird’s eye view of some of the island’s spectacularly unique volcanic plains.

If you’re hiking the island, this is also where you’ll start (or end) your hike to Fajã do Ouvidor.

You can also grab a drink at Cafe Esperança in Norte Grande – the cafe itself is a bit shady, but their terrace has an absolute spectacular view.

Fajã do Ouvidor

Each fajã is unique and an important add to the landscape, but one of them is more famous than the rest, and that’s Fajã do Ouvidor. Just up the coast from the little town Norte Grande, this popular village is surrounded by lush greenery and rugged cliffs.

It is the only fajã that has many restaurants to choose from, a cafe, a lighthouse, and even a disco! Apparently, this fajã being so different from the others, it had to do with a municipal approval that gave the green light to new construction in Fajã do Ouvidor and that divides and worries the local population.

I can recommend restaurant O Amilcar for lunch, the food was splendid.

Spend some time exploring the village and sunbathing and swimming in the turquoise waters of the Poça Simão Dias natural pool.

Poça Simão Dias

A true natural paradise of deep waters (and sometimes with strong currents), surrounded by vertical basalt columns resulting from the cooling and solidification of lava.

The immensity of the turquoise blue between the imposing black basaltic columns and the green mountains in the background makes it a true spectacle.

The water is always cool (between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius). The space to lay your towel is limited (on the rocks, where you can). Access to the pools is on foot.

São Jorge Cheese Factory (Uniqueijo)

Close to the capital (5 minutes drive), in the town of Beira, is an União de Cooperativas Agricolas de Lacticínios de São Jorge (Uniqueijo) where you can taste (and buy) the famous ‘queijo da ilha DOP’ (Protected Designation of Origin) of São Jorge, i.e. it can only be produced in São Jorge. The cheeses range from 3 months to 24 months of maturing (the longer the maturing, the stronger and spicier the cheese), and, apart from buying the best souvenir of the island, they do free tastings as well.

There are currently six cooperatives on the island from which 30,000 PDO cheeses are produced annually.

The cheese production process has remained unchanged for 500 years, obtained from raw cow’s milk and classified as hard or semi-hard cured cheese, evolving according to the months of curing. It is sold with a minimum curing period of 3 months because, apparently, before two months it does not get that slightly spicy taste that differentiates it.

You can visit the cheese factory and watch the entire process from the early stages of fitting the cheese in a mold and walking through the storage facilities. Notice the packaging? It’s Saint Jorge riding his horse and slaying a dragon.

Photography isn’t allowed during the tour. You’ll be handed sanitary overalls, hair nets, and shoe covers before entering the processing area. All jewelry must be removed and stowed in lockers. Tours are available in English.

The Cheese Factory Tour on São Jorge is actually really well done and is informative and worth it!

Before or after the tour, stop in the cafe where there are free São Jorge cheese samples. There is also a cafe with limited snacks available.

Uniqueijo Cheese Tours last 45 minutes. Price of the tour is 5€. Visit it from Monday to Friday 9:30 – 11:30 & 13:00 – 16:00 (you might have to wait for availability).

Miradouro do Morro Das Velas - optional

Depending on how tired you are there’s also a magnificent short-hiking spot very close to town Velas.

The Miradouro do Morro Das Velas is not an officially registered trail on the island, but is more of a local hiking trail. The trail is not well marked, but easy to follow. An offline map will definitely come in handy – I recommend maps.me app.

The trail begins behind the Ermida Nossa Senhora do Livramento and climbs up the hillside. Appreciate the views of the unique rock formations and the goats that now graze on the green pastures of the crater rim. There are also lovely views of Velas town.

The ruins that remain are of an old whaling lookout. To visit this beautiful place safely, stay on the trail and avoid stepping too close to the steep drop-off edges of the cliff.

Even without hiking to the viewpoint, there are nice views of the rock formation from Miradouro Entre Morros.

São Jorge Itinerary - Day 2 (West)

Western part of the island is much less visited than the rest.

Velas

The capital (and the largest town) of the island São Jorge is Velas. Wander down to the port, where you can take your pick of various water activities and boat tours. A boat tour will give you a new perspective on the island, and you’ll get a good look at the village’s famed volcanic arch.

Meander through the streets and take a look at some of the regional products sold at the municipal market. Don’t forget to take a quick dip in the nearby natural pools before setting off for the rest of the day. The refreshing blue water pools between jutting basalt rocks contrast stunningly with the ocean background.

Make sure you grab something to eat before heading off to the next points, there aren’t many restaurants around the Western part of the island.

Fajã de João Dias

While driving up towards the tip of the island, take some time to pass by the Fajã de João Dias. This colourful fajã is one of the most isolated places in São Jorge, and you can only access it via a steep winding trail. Once at the bottom, you will witness breathtakingly dramatic landscapes framing this small seaside village.

Parque Florestal das Sete Fontes

Before heading down to the fajã, or on your way back up, look out for the viewpoint by the side of the road. This is a great spot to get a bird’s eye view of some of the island’s spectacularly unique volcanic plains.

If you’re hiking the island, this is also where you’ll start (or end) your hike to Fajã do Ouvidor.

You can also grab a drink at Cafe Esperança in Norte Grande – the cafe itself is a bit shady, but their terrace has an absolute spectacular view.

Fajã do Ouvidor

Continue following the road to the northwest, where you’ll stumble upon the Sete Fontes Forest Park. This nature reserve is home to many plant species, such as ferns, azaleas, and fuchsias. You can walk one of the many trails through the thick woods to find a picnic area and children’s playground or enjoy one of several viewpoints looking out onto neighbouring islands. For some history, visit the small chapel of São João Baptista, a monument built in commemoration of the many Azorean emigrants worldwide.

Entry is free of charge, parking lot just next to the entrance.

Ponta dos Rosais

We end our day at the westernmost tip of the island, at the ruins of Ponta dos Rosais. Walk around this lighthouse complex to learn where lighthouse keepers used to live and what was needed to support the facilities. Watch the sunset across the horizon and cast its shadows onto the neighbouring islands of Pico and Faial.

For a different vantage point, climb up the hill to the Miradouro da Vigia. Here you can discover the history of whale-hunting on the island and see the lighthouse complex from above.

São Jorge Itinerary - Day 3 (Central Eastern part) - long linear hike

It is very popular (and rare too, you will not meet many people here) to do the Serra do Topo hike down to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo and then to Faja dos Cubres (PR1SJO). This long linear hike should take you about 6 hours if you stop for lunch and swim in caldeira as well. I would recommend to hire a taxi for this day, since Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo is one of the most inaccessible places on the island, but well worth the visit.

Serra do Topo

On a nice sunny day, you’ll get unbelievable views from Serra do Topo. Some visitors use it as a photo-stop only, others use it as a starting point for the hike down to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo. With just a few minutes walking each way you can see on both sides of the island (South and North).

There’s a small parking lot available for cars, free of charge.

Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo

One of the most inaccessible places on the island is Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo. To reach this village, you must hike either from Serra do Topo or from Fajã dos Cubres (this is where we will end our hike if you follow this itinerary), enjoying stunning ocean vistas and remarkable waterfalls enroute.

Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo was created only in 1757 after a tremor hit the island. With time, the seawater erosion created a central lagoon that locals now use for swimming. There is also a vibrant surfing community forming here. Each September, you can experience the local procession that ends at the Ermida de Santo Cristo, the village chapel.

What’s unique about the lake of Caldeira da Fajã do Santo Cristo is that it is the only place on the island where clams are harvested.

Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo has only one restaurant, O’Borges, and I recommend booking it in advance to make sure they have a spot for you. Food is beyond delicious!

You can absolutely swim in the caldeira (lake), just be mindful about possible jellyfish – ask about it in the village (more about the jellyfish below the picture). During nice weather people surf and kayak around caldeira and surrounding ocean, rent of the equipment is possible just at the shore.

Jellyfish: sometimes you may encounter a jellyfish (aguaviva) or a Portuguese caravel whose sting is painful and dangerous. The good thing is that these last one’s float and are easily detectable, but in case you see one, get out of the water immediately and warn other people of their presence. In case you have been stung by either of them, it is very important that you follow these official recommendations: do not scratch the area of the sting (to prevent the venom from spreading); do not clean with fresh water or alcohol, clean only with sea water and very carefully; and in case the sting is a Portuguese dogfish sting, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Faja dos Cubres

Before heading down to the fajã, or on your way back up, look out for the viewpoint by the side of the road. This is a great spot to get a bird’s eye view of some of the island’s spectacularly unique volcanic plains.

If you’re hiking the island, this is also where you’ll start (or end) your hike to Fajã do Ouvidor.

You can also grab a drink at Cafe Esperança in Norte Grande – the cafe itself is a bit shady, but their terrace has an absolute spectacular view.

Fajã do Ouvidor

It is one of the most well-preserved fajãs of the island and owes its name to the cubres, yellow flowers that abounded here. Unique to this fajã are the four small islets surrounded by reed swamps in a central lagoon. As soon as you arrive at Fajã dos Cubres, you will notice the Nossa Senhora de Lourdes Chapel, built in 1908, next to a spring of water considered miraculous by the local population, and the curious constructions in volcanic basalt are striking.

Here you will find a lagoon that precedes the sea and which is the habitat of different species of birds. For this reason, this lagoon system was distinguished as a Site of International Importance. On the margins of the lagoon, there are pastures where cows roam freely.

Fajã dos Cubres is also the end (or the beginning) of the most beautiful trail on the island, which connects Serra do Topo with this fajã, passing through the Caldera de Santo Cristo.

Miradouro da Fajã dos Cubres

As you leave the fajã don’t miss the Miradouro da Fajã dos Cubres, a viewpoint over the blue and green landscapes of the fajãs below.

São Jorge Itinerary - Day 4 (East)

Farol do Topo

Experience São Jorge the way its first settlers did by heading to the village of Topo. It was on this eastern tip where São Jorge’s first settlers disembarked onto the craggy cliffside centuries ago.

In Topo there is a lighthouse overlooking a very biodiverse islet – Ilhéu do Topo. A curiosity related to this islet is that in summer you can see cows swimming around here. Apparently, given the proximity of the islet (100 meters from the coast), the cows swim until they reach the islet to graze there. It is for this reason that the town of Topo is also known for the quality of its cheese (Queijo do Topo).

For a refreshing start to the day, jump into the crystal-clear waters of the natural pools here. Popular among residents, these pools offer a relaxing swim and a closer look at the volcanic rocks.

Both the viewpoint and the scenic road on the way to Topo have incredible views, so go slowly and enjoy the ride.

Cascata do Cruzal

Soon when you leave Topo, take the opportunity to visit the Cascata do Cruzal. A short trail leads to this waterfall hidden in the lush forest and flora of the region.

Just down the road from this waterfall is the Finisterra Cheese Factory of Topo.

Fajã dos Vimes

The villages of São Jorge have seen many effects of volcanic and seismic activity, and the Fajã dos Vimes is no different. This area was entirely destroyed in 1757 when a tremor hit the island, but today it is famous for its coffee plantations.

Don’t miss a cup of local brew from Café Nunes, a family-run coffee plantation and artisan space. Cafe Nunes also sells pastries and cheesecakes.

Fajã dos Bodes

You can walk to Fajã dos Bodes from neighbouring Fajã dos Vimes. This is where cattle are often sheltered in the winter months, and is a great place to witness the island’s traditional lifestyle.

Calheta

Finish your day just a stone-throw away from Velas, in one of the main villages of São Jorge, Calheta.

For a sense of perspective and the challenges of building in such hilly landscape, make sure to stop by the Miradouro da Calheta. From here, you can gaze out at the Atlantic, framed by Calheta in the foreground and the beautiful Pico Island in the background.

Walk through this charming village, one of the oldest on the island, and eventually, you will reach the village port. It’s an ideal spot for diving and swimming and is very popular with locals.

You can observe the most beautiful sunsets here, viewing Mount Pico in the distance.

The island’s only ethnographic museum where visitors can learn about the local history, culture and traditions can also be found in Calheta.
